10 Things You May Not Know About Hospice

1. Hospice is not a place but a special kind of care.

2. Most of our patients are cared for in their own homes, but we also provide care in nursing homes, assisted living, long term care facilities, the hospital as well as in our Hospice House.

3. A hospice care team is made up of doctors, nurses, social workers, counselors, spiritual care providers, trained volunteers and other skilled professionals who provide compassionate care and expert pain and symptom management.

4. Hospice care is available to people of all ages with any kind of life-limiting illness, including cancer, advanced Alzheimer's, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, etc.

5. Hospice care is fully covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and  by most HMO's and private insurance plans.

6. Hospice provides the medications and medical equipment needed to keep a person safe and comfortable.

7. There is no limit to the amount of hospice care a person can receive: It's available as long as a doctor believes the patient is eligible.

8. Our hospice care includes complementary therapies such as music, story keeping, pet therapy and massage which all help bring additional comfort to patients and families.

9. Hospice programs offer grief support to the families of our patients. We also care for those in the community who grieve.

10. Not all hospices are the same; not all are not-for-profit and not all offer the same level of care and services.
