Hi to all!

Are we all heroes?

This past weekend I had the honor of watching my son become an Eagle Scout.  It was with great pride that I saw my baby speak about how he helped his High School and all the students with his project. (He painted and updated the Nurse's Office and made a College Resource Room so students could research and meet with colleges.) One thing that really struck me was that one of the speakers got up and called the three young men who were all being honored "heroes"!  I sat there and thought, "What is a hero?"

We all picture heroes as people who are police, firefighters or  soldiers, people who risk their lives to save others. How could these young Eagle Scouts be heroes?  Then I thought about it: A hero is a person who helps someone.  A hero is someone who has the power or the strength or the wisdom or is just there at the right place and the right time to help a person get through a tough situation.  Heroes come in all shapes and sizes.  A hero can be the person who helps you change your tire. There is a 16-year old boy I read about recently who is still fighting cancer and does not give up; he is a hero to others...and an inspiration, because we all say,"If a 16 year old can do that, so can I!"

A true hero is someone who saves you from danger---or from yourself.  I wonder how many times I have thought of others that have helped me as a heroes, and I remember them all.  The person who helped me when I fell and was hurt, the person who helped change my tire in the pouring rain when he could have gone past like so many others, the man who found my wallet and drove to my house to return it and did not take a dime.  They are all heroes.  Yes, we are blessed to have so many heroes---big and small---around us to help.

I know that the police, firemen, nurses, soldiers, doctors, emergency medical personnel are all super heroes.  Then we have the everyday ordinary heroes like you and me who help to make the world we know complete.

So now that you know you can be a hero---go be one---even if it is to yourself.  Go save yourself or someone you know from whatever it is that is dangerous!  It could be a thought, an action or reaction to something that is holding you back.  No special "hero cape" is required, just the belief that you are a hero, and you are a hero to someone.

So get out there and shine!

Sincerely,

Kathy Lindert
