"The agony and the ecstasy is a
six-year-old boy trying to go to sleep,
knowing he's going fishing in the morning."
~Frank P. Baron

The Michigan DNR website has gotten an update and you can now find every bit of information about fishing in Michigan, maps for trout streams, and regulations for various fishing areas all in one place.  It's a wealth of information!  Click here to go directly to the site.  I know that my brother (Ben) will find this particularly interesting.  He is obsessed with fish.  I mean this almost literally.  He hasn't been diagnosed or anything, but my brother has only found one thing that is more important to him than fishing: His wife (that is really weird to say because they just got married a week ago!!).  Ben disappears from family functions, doesn't show up for meals, and sometimes is out all night fishing if they are "running."  Somehow we accept this about him.  "Where's Ben?" one of us will ask in the midst of a meal or when we arrive and find he is not where we expected.  "Fishing,"  is the ALWAYS the response.  "Right," is ALWAYS the answer.  What were we thinking?  Of COURSE that's where he is.  It doesn't matter the season or the fish.  His seasons differ from the rest of ours:  Winter, ice-fishing ; Spring, tying flies in preparation for fishing; Summer, fishing, fishing, and oh my god fishing; Fall, whitefish, salmon, and bait fish fishing.  I may not ever understand his love of fish, but I do understand what it's like to seek your own piece of quiet in such a noisy world.  For Ben, and those like him, here are the latest in fishing books:

Fishing Stories an Everyman's Pocket Classic

Henry Hughes claims in the opening that fishing has created more great literature than any other recreational sport.  Well, he obviously hasn't heard my mountain biking stories, but other than that, he might be right.

Back in print!  Nick Lyons grew up fishing, and spent as many days as he could manage with a fishing pole in his hand.  If you know someone who can identify, then this might be just the right book.

You might live here:

We're guessing that more than a few of our readers actually do live in a house upon the dirt, between the lake and woods.  If so, you really should come meet the author who wrote about it.  Authors like Jess Walter, Lauren Groff, and publications like the Chicago Tribune and Kirkus are using descriptions like: "a slinking, dangerous fairy tale," and "as lovely and brutal as a dream," and "deeply affecting."

How can you not be intrigued?  Author Matt Bell will be in the store Friday afternoon signing copies of his book from 2-4pm.  If you'd like to learn more, click here.

Wahoo!!  Michigan author, and store favorite, Kristina Riggle was a finalist in last week's Round 11 of the Three-Minute-Fiction contest on NPR!! (She isn't just adorable, she's smart too!)  You can read her story, Chips, here.  Click here to listen to the NPR broadcast.  Congratulations!

Kristina's new novel, The Whole Golden World comes out in November.  (Now taking pre-orders.)  Click here for a full list of Kristina Riggle novels.

Exclamation point doesn't know how to fit in. It seems like the only time he doesn't stand out from his friends is when he's sleeping. He tries so hard to conform to the others, but no matter what he does, he can't be like them. Exclamation point feels lonely and upset. Then, he meets question mark. Question mark is so talkative! Can't he stop asking questions? Finally, exclamation point can't handle it and he yells, STOP! He realizes that this is how he can fit in! How exciting! Yippee! Exclamation point finally discovered his place in the world. This is a really adorable book that shows kids that it's okay not to fit in, and that standing out can be super fun.

Red Knit Cap Girl by Naoko Stoop

Red Knit Cap Girl lives in the forest with all of her animal friends. She has so much time to wonder about everything around her, but she wonders about the Moon most of all. She really wants to talk to the Moon, but how can she get close enough? She tries climbing a tree, but it's not tall enough. She sees the Moon in the pond, but alas, it's just a reflection. Will she ever get to talk to the Moon? Finally, Hedgehog tells her she should to talk to Owl. Owl says that the Moon will come to her if she finds a way. So Red Knit Cap Girl gathers all their friends, and they throw a party for the Moon. But Moon doesn't appear. Then, she tells her friends to be silent and blow out the candles. Finally, the Moon comes down! She talks to the Moon and learns that the Moon will always be there for her. Red Knit Cap Girl shows us that sometimes we need to just take a few minutes to be quiet. Unplug. Sit down and enjoy the things in life that are free, while we can.  (And the sequel will be out in November!)
