Del Norte County
Amazing Diversity and Boundless Options
Recognized for our incredible natural beauty, Del Norte County is the crown jewel that sits atop California "where the redwoods meet the sea." Most of Del Norte's 1,007 square miles is unpopulated unspoiled terrain comprised of spectacular ancient redwood groves, majestic coastline, two wild and scenic rivers, and 11,000 acres of publicly owned dunes and wetlands. The County's only incorporated city is Crescent City, listed on Forbes Traveler's 2009 and 2010 "List of the 20 Prettiest Towns in the United States" and chosen because of its stunning old growth redwoods, pristine beaches, wondrous scenery, historic working harbor, two iconic lighthouses, and small town charm. Explore the amazing diversity and boundless options of Del Norte County for your film projects.
NATURAL BEAUTY
Ancient redwoods, pristine coastline with sandy and rocky primitive beaches and sea stacks, lagoons, 200- mile- long wild and scenic rivers, dunes, wetlands, hundreds of species of birds, in or within a short distance from Crescent City.
GREAT WEATHER
Mild winters and summers with average coastal temperatures rarely rising above 70 degrees in summer and 55 degrees in winter, are perfect for filming. Most rainfall occurs between the months of January and April. Our rain and coastal fog are what make the giant redwoods grow and keep this region green longer than elsewhere in California.
UNIQUE ARCHITECTURE
Cabins, farm and ranch houses, lodges along the rivers, oceanfront beach houses, a riverfront historic Inn, two historic lighthouses with public access, mid twentieth century neighborhoods and shopping districts. We have a variety in our community.
DISTINCTIVE ATTRACTIONS
Great filming attractions in our area are: Redwood National Park, Klamath Tour Through Tree (walk, bike, or drive through a giant redwood over 700 years old), Jet Boat 45 miles up the Klamath River, Trees of Mystery ride in the Sky Trail gondola to view the redwood canopy 600 feet from the ground, Ocean World (a half million gallon aquarium where you can experience sea life of the north coast), Battery Point Lighthouse and St. George Reef Lighthouse (the only off-shore lighthouse in the world with public access), End of the Trail Native American Museum, the Ship Ashore Museum (located in a 1925-era luxury yacht in Smith River), Marine Mammal Center, and Stout Grove (easily accessed off of Howland Road, immaculate 44 acres of giant virgin redwoods along the Smith River).
LOOKS LIKE
Any town USA, fishing port with lighthouses, commercial maritime community, wild riverfront, to name a few. The town of Smith River could double for the Netherlands since it is the "Easter Lily Capitol of the World." Ewoks have passed through our other-worldly primeval forests and ET's spaceship landed in our meadow.
