City Purchases Land for New Fire Hall

Welland City Council last evening passed a By-law for the purchase of property on King and Lincoln Streets for a Fire Station. The purchase price is $300,000 for 4.1 acres. The property has access from King Street and Lincoln Street and is situated next to the Welland Community Wellness Complex and Rexall Pharmacy.

      This land is strategically located and optimally meets the criteria identified in the City's Fire Facility Needs Study Part 1 Report previously approved by Council.  It further complements the new Community Improvement Plan (CIP) being introduced for the King Street and Downtown areas, and promotes the City's Health & Wellness Strategy for the King Street Corridor.

'Million-dollar' facility opens in Chippawa Park

Chippawa Park Community Centre  

It cost more than the $875,000 the city budgeted, but the latest jewel in Welland's Chippawa Park seemed to be worth it to most people who showed up for its grand opening.

    Hidden expenses added up when the 65-year-old former pool building was being renovated since last October, including need to repair decaying exterior walls and install a French drain - but all while working toward a goal to maintain, but also enhance, the structure.

Welland Development Commission donates towards Welland Skate Park

The Welland Development Commission (WDC) recently presented the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) with a cheque for $1,100 for the Welland Skate Park.  The funds were raised during the commission's 16th annual golf tournament in June.  Pictured from left Mayor Barry Sharpe, Riley Raso, Zachary Meyer, Paige Racicot and Vinay Sharma, MYAC, Jessica Duliban, City of Welland Employee and WDC Chair David McLeod. 

Country radio station coming to Niagara

Country is coming to the city - again.

           RB Communications, which runs Giant FM, has announced it will be bringing a second radio station to Welland.

    The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has awarded a second FM licence to the company to operate Country 89 in Niagara.

Incentives for downtown investment

A new community improvement plan should "take the city of Welland to the next level," revitalizing the downtown core.

     Representatives from Dillon Consulting and RCI Consulting were at Monday's city council meeting, discussing the plan developed as part of the city's downtown health and wellness cluster project.

Dragon Boat Championships

The Welland Recreational Canal Corporation and Dragon Boat Canada (DBC) will host the 2014 North American University Dragon Boat Championships (NORAMU) on Saturday, October 4th, at the Welland International Flatwater Centre North Course, bringing the top University Teams from across North America.
