Manufacturing Case Study:

When a company has decided to introduce a new product to market, time is of the essence. So when Welded Tube of Canada moved forward on its plan to expand its output of oil country tubular goods (OCTGs), products used in oil and gas drilling, the company's leadership moved quickly on choosing a site for the new manufacturing plant this endeavor required.

Based in Concord, Ontario and founded in 1970, Welded Tube makes mechanical and structural pipe and tubing for the oil and gas industries. With total manufacturing and ancillary space approximating one million square feet throughout North America, Welded Tube of Canada was the first steel tubular producer in North America to be ISO registered.

  • WELLAND - The excited children waved their Pan Am Games flags as they gathered to celebrate the opening of the city's newest sports venue.

Watching the children from the city's day camp program, Ian Troop wondered how the new Welland International Flatwater Centre might influence their futures. He wondered aloud if their lives might be changed by growing up in a city with a facility that's unrivaled in North America, drawing top athletes from around the world to compete here.

ASSOCIATION OF FRANCOPHONE MUNICIPALITIES OF ONTARIO 25TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE IS COMING TO WELLAND IN 2014

Welland, ON- City of Welland is honoured to be the proud host of the 2014 Association of Francophone Municipalities of Ontario (AFMO) 25th Annual Conference. The announcement was made during the 24th AFMO Conference, which was hosted last week in Sturgeon Falls. City of Welland Councillor Rocky Letourneau and Lucie Huot Executive Director for Centre d'Emploi et de Ressources Francophone /Francophone Employment and Resource Centre (CERF) were present to accept the
privilege.

AFMO was founded, in 1989 under the mandate to uphold and improve municipal service delivery and governance - in both French and English - in the regions of Ontario designated under the French Language Services Act of Ontario. Welland has a significant Francophone community, which further makes it an ideal host city.

"The City has had an interest in hosting the AFMO conference for quite some time now. We've made
arrangements to secure accommodations and facilities should we be granted to host the 25th anniversary conference. The preparations have paid off now that the conference will be coming to our city in 2014," said Letourneau. "Everyone I chatted with at the conference took an interest in what the
city had to offer," he added.
Hosting the 25th AFMO Conference is a significant recognition for Welland's Francophone Community.

"CERF Niagara is excited to get involved with this milestone event," said Huot. "It's achievements like this that are a testament of the importance our work has on the community."

City of Welland is scheduled to host the AFMO 25th anniversary conference in September 2014. This
will bring nearly 200 visitors from 35 municipalities across Ontario to participate in professional development and francophone engagement.
  • Solar farm development underway

WELLAND - After nearly four years, Michael Zimerman's hard work is finally starting to pay off. Work is now well underway to build his company's first solar farm along Netherby Rd. on the east of the Welland Canal, on two parcels of heavy industrial-zoned land totaling eight hectares.

"Things are happening," Zimerman said in a telephone interview from Group IV Solar's Toronto office, Wednesday. "It's pretty exciting. It's been coming up to four years of development, and it's starting to come together."
