Fall is almost over and this season often brings with it a desire to get organized and become well stocked for the winter ahead.

In this edition, we cover some basics that you may not think of automatically. For instance - what about first aid and basic household safety checks?  See the panel on the right for downloads and checklists of all kinds to help bring order for you and your loved one.

Last, it is a great time to do a "medication" checkup.  Proper medication management can be a lifesaver and ensure that your loved one stays healthy this winter!

Medications are a big part of caregiving.  Seniors who take medications as prescribed are more likely to see health benefits.  When interviewed, most people think they do not need any help with remembering to take medications.  In studies, however, it turns out that about half of those taking medications fail to take them as prescribed and frequently forget doses altogether.  In the senior population, non-adherence is even higher ranging from 50-75%.

First aid is an important consideration when caring for an elderly person at home.  It is important to know that seniors are more vulnerable to accidents and injuries since they often lack strength, flexibility and can have brittle bones.  Their sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste may have declined also making them more vulnerable to accidents. -
