Greetings!

Understandably, we often confuse "health habits" with tedious, boring routines and less than inspiring food.  Yawn....

We all know we are supposed to eat well, drink lots of water, exercise, but what about other health habits?  What about sleep?  How letting go of worry can be good for us and how pets can improve senior health?

Turns out fun things like pets and dreamy things like a good night's sleep can be just as good for us as a plate full of carrots and an hour of the treadmill!  Hopefully, this month's tips are kinder and "gentler" ways to stay healthy!   I think this dog has the right idea!

Elderly Insomnia

As we age, our sleeping patterns change and these changes can make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep. Good sleeping has been shown to improve blood sugar levels and improve type 2 diabetes, among other general health boosts.

Insomnia in seniors is very common. In fact, the National Institute of Health reports that 50% of adults 60 years of age or older are affected by insomnia.

At some point or another, life is not perfect. Okay - let's face it - often things do not go the way we want them to! The hard part of life sometimes is not in how we control those things - but rather in how we determine that we just need to let go.  One sure way to add stress and strife is to try to control things to fit how you think they should be working out!

So, you want to eat healthier foods, walk more, reduce stress, quit smoking? One of the largest hurdles is our own lack of self-acceptance. When we overeat or fail to exercise, we get down on ourselves and feel like we are "no good."

The truth is, we are fine just the way we are. Failing to do what we know is best for ourselves is not a reason to become critical of ourselves. It is a reason to try again the next day. In fact, that critical voice makes us feel worse and when we feel bad, we tend to overeat, smoke too much, etc.
