Spring Cleaning

Pretty Spring Flowers

Greetings!

Spring cannot come soon enough!  Here in Central PA, all we have seen, for what seems like 6 months, is cold freezing rain and snow!  We had one very nice day last week and I suddenly became obsessed with the idea of spring and everything it stands for.

This is the time of year to open windows and release all that stale air from the long winter.  This is also the time for letting go of things that no longer serve us and for creating new things in our lives to help us grow and stay healthy.

So, for me, "spring cleaning" means more than just getting out the buckets and scrubbing - it can also mean a renewal in our surroundings, our homes and our lives.

Happy Spring!  Hope you enjoy it!

What does it mean to get "your act together?" I know I personally "commanded" it to myself ALL of the time. Many of us are certain that "other people" need to get their act together!  And all of us usually like to appear that we have mastered life.

The thing is, "getting your act together" literally means making your life work better.

One of the jobs of a family caregiver is to help an aging parent or relative with old-fashioned housekeeping. Routine house cleaning can be done easily on a regular basis.  But, every so often, the house needs a more thorough wash.

elderly hoarding

Hearding is a complex disorder that is not yet fully understood by the Mental Health Profession. It is compulsive shopping, acquiring, searching and saving of objects which leads to dysfunction, health, and safety issues in the home.

Elderly people may say they compulsively collect all that "stuff" because they believe that an item will be useful or valuable in the future. Or they may claim things are unique, hold sentimental value, or are irreplaceable.  Sometimes, the explanation is related to finding "deals" even if the deal is for something they don't need or want.

Spring is here - a good time to let go of the clutter. Our senior loved ones are prone to collecting things for a variety of reasons - some of which are fear, anxiety, depression, and memories attached to specific items. Some seniors will have items with no meaningful reason attached.

Now, there is clutter and then there is hoarding. Hoarders will have an obsession to their items while "clutter-ers" will be more willing to let go with a little loving encouragement. A hoarder may need professional help.
