Recovery in Our Own Words

Letting Go with The Serenity Prayer

I find that one of the more challenging issues I cope with is knowing that my good intentions have no value to my child (my qualifier). Recently, I was doing dishes (while she is living in our garden shed) to role model for my qualifier. But upon reflection, I thought, this is stupid. I should load the dishwasher because my dishes are dirty, not to "teach" my kid what I want her to do.

The Serenity Prayer is posted in my bathroom where I read it every morning. I am getting closer to accepting what I cannot change. I have no courage in me to even try to change "her" life style. And the wisdom is that when she wants my help, if she ever chooses to change, then I can decide if I am willing or able to support her path.

I still have a glimmer of hope inside my heart. But I awake each day and say to God, "Dear God, about my daughter, I let go and let God." I am powerless over her issues and need to focus on my issues.

Pre-Alateen & Alateen Meetings

There are programs of help for young people who believe their lives have been influenced by someone else's drinking. Different meetings are available for different age groups: Pre-alateen for children ages 6 - 13 and Alateen for ages 12 - 20. See the District 14 Meeting List (bottom right corner) to see Pre-Alateen and Alateen Meetings currently available in our area.

Alateen Talk

Alateen Talk is the WSO Alateen quarterly publication. Alateen members from all over the world share their experience, strength, and hope. Their sharings relate to their personal lives, how their Alateen group is functioning, and ways in which they carry the Alateen message to young people who are still suffering from someone else's drinking.

Contact Linda G. @ 925-556-6124 or Jen W. @ 925-383-6723 to get more information. Any Al-Anon or Alateen member can volunteer!

Institutions Service brings the Al-Anon presence to the institutions in our community while separating the Al-Anon philosophy from that of the treatment centers. Our Al-Anon/Alateen members reach out to families of alcoholics who are residents/outpatients of hospitals or treatment centers or are inmates of correctional & other residential facilities.

Public Outreach
public outreach
Volunteers  speak on Al-Anon to members of the community (at medical facilities, health fairs, schools, etc.). We are also considering holding a workshop to teach members how to do public outreach speaking.

We are currently in need of a Public Outreach Coordinator and Alternate Coordinator. If you are interested in volunteering your service, or would just like more information to see if this could be right for you, please contact Marilyn H. @ 707-643-4451.

Today, I know I am worthy of respect, friendship, and love

I have fond memories of my childhood. My father, whom I loved very much, was the center of my universe. He was loved by all-family and friends. He was well-educated and very intelligent. However, even as a ten-year-old, I could see how his life was shrinking, and how he'd become trapped inside his addiction to drink. It made him weak, unable to function and live a healthy life, or provide for his family.
...
My boss knew I needed Al-Anon--before I did

My boss told me that I needed to go to Al-Anon. He said I wasn't handling customers who had been drinking in a proper way. I admit that I was mad at them when they walked in the door and saw that they weren't exactly sober. I was dealing with my own drunken husband all the time, but couldn't yell at him. It would just have made matters worse.
...
Forum article gives mother the perspective she needed

My beautiful son had successfully entered the honors college in our state, and had never given me any cause for concern. But this new college-life brought changes, including drinking. The downward spiral led to three separate suicide attempts.

Bienvenidos a Al-Anon y Alateen

Recuperación. Unidad. Servicio.

Cómo me ayuda Al-Anon.
