Welcome to the District 14 Newsletter, created & distributed by Al-Anon members.
An Introduction
I am delighted to serve as your new Newsletter Coordinator...
A short while after first coming to Al-Anon, I happened upon
the District 14
Newsletter while browsing the district website. I noticed that the last newsletter had been from months past, and that there was a request for a volunteer to serve as the new Newsletter Coordinator. I felt a great desire to inquire about the position... However, I had many excuses: my work schedule, my kids, my inexperience with Al-Anon, my need to focus on my early recovery.

Last fall, I took on on my first big service commitment by volunteering to be Decorations Coordinator for the 2014 Day in Al-Anon. When the DIA ended, I had a compelling drive to contribute another form of service to the Al-Anon fellowship. I again happened upon the District 14 Newsletter and the entreaty for a new Newsletter Coordinator. I felt my Higher Power calling me...and I was ready to volunteer.

I was ready & willing, for unlike before, I had realized by experiencing first-hand how service helps so greatly in my recovery. Service allows me to take action, to make decisions, to contribute to the fellowship, to find great opportunities for learning & growth, to give me challenges that force me to exercise my program tools & remind me of my Higher Power, to find the form of self-care that comes with putting my talents to good use & being proud of them, to practice letting go of the lesser things when my character defects seem to magnify my perceived mistakes, to practice healthy communication & developing relationships by continually interacting with other Al-Anon members.

If I can give to the fellowship & this program a small fraction of what I have received, I will be grateful... I am delighted to serve as your new Newsletter Coordinator, and I hope to serve you all well during my term in this position.

In Service,
Michelle - District Newsletter Coordinator
Recovery in Our Own Words

Turning Fear Into Faith

I was powerless over the addict in my life. After some time in Al-Anon, it became obvious to me. I had tried everything I could think of (multiple times) and it didn't work. He didn't change. But admitting powerlessness was scary. If I couldn't save him, who could? Who would? Things were also going to hell in a hand basket at work. I was afraid I was going to be fired from my job of 20 years. I learned in Al-Anon that my fears, anxiety, and discomfort lead me to try to control things to avoid facing my fears. Step One told me I was powerless, but that was bad news--if I didn't have any power and couldn't control things, my fears could overwhelm me. When it became obvious I was powerless, over my addict and my boss, I was really lost at what to do next. I knew I needed help.

One day, my sister (an experienced Al-Anon member) asked me about my greatest fears with my qualifier. I told her I was afraid he would die, become homeless, be unhappy for the rest of his life. She asked, "And then what?" I realized what would happen. If he died or became homeless or was unhappy for the rest of his life, I would be very sad and in great pain; however, I was already very sad and in great pain. And he had not reached any of those points. So what was I doing? I was living in the future, making myself miserable in the present over some potential future misery. It didn't make sense, but I didn't know how to stop. Not only could I not control the addict, it appeared I could not control myself.

What I learned was to trust. I began slowly by trusting the people in Al-Anon. At first, I'd hear people share and think how I or my situation differed; what made sense for them probably wouldn't work for me. A member said to me that we are all different, but it is how we are the same that makes this program work. After hearing the same stories from so many different people, I tried some of what I heard, like "letting go." Maybe I was not so different after all and could learn. So I started to try. Little by little, I tried and learned.

After learning to trust the people, I learned from them to trust the program. They seemed happier than I, had something I wanted, and knew how to get it. So I began to work the Steps and learned I could have a Higher Power-a puzzling phrase to me at first. It seemed everyone was talking about God but unable to say "God" for risk of offending someone. It seemed so weird. But I did want to have faith, to be able to Let Go & Let God, though how was a mystery. So I listened to folks in the room again and did Act As If: learn how by simply pretending to know how. Whenever I faced fears or anxiety, I asked myself, "What would I do if I had faith? What would a person with faith do?" Usually it was "let it go" or "quiet my mind or think about something else." I did and felt calmer. A person with faith would pray so I also prayed.

I did learn to trust and eventually came to believe in a higher power, my own, with all the positive aspects I want and none of the negative aspects I don't want. I began to understand why we say "higher power": it truly can be whatever works for you--God, the collective wisdom of people in these rooms, nature, the sun. I learned there are many powers greater than myself. That allowed me to let things flow without exerting control. Trust, or faith, allows me to live one day at a time so I can stay in the moment and not project into the future.

The progression for me that began with fear, anxiety, and discomfort--now, two years later, has become a solid faith. Facing my fears, instead of trying to control them away, gave me strength. Admitting powerlessness was empowering. Learning to trust others and have faith, to let go and watch & learn rather than dictate, not needing to know the answer--these turned out to be much better for me. I'm not good at it; I practice repeatedly. But now I can relax knowing it will be okay and I am not in charge. This, to me, is serenity. It happened when I worked Steps 1, 2, and 3 and faith appeared.

All are Welcome!

I think many people aren't sure they belong when they first come to Al-Anon. I know I didn't think I belonged, because I was no longer living with an alcoholic, and hadn't been for years. I grew up in the family disease of alcoholism, and later married, then divorced an alcoholic. I am incredibly grateful today that my first Sponsor helped me see that adult children of alcoholics are welcome in Al-Anon.

 Emptying My 'Closet of Hurts'

For eight years, I had been living a life of emotional hoarding because of alcoholism. I lived in seclusion, consumed by depression, constant worry, and panic. Unlike a hoarder who collects things, I had been collecting "hurts."

A Letter to My Mom

I didn't know, Mom, that you were struggling with alcohol and prescription drugs.

I didn't know that Dad was yelling at me because he was trying to control the uncontrollable--your addictions.

I didn't know why there was no talk at home about anything, or why there were rules that kept changing.

I didn't know that you loved me. Even though you never hugged me or said you loved me--it was evident in the clothes & birthday cakes you made me.
