Ice Axe Repair!

Traditional mountaineers generally appreciate a wooden-handled ice axe as a general purpose backpacking tool.  While modern ice-climbing axes and general purpose axes provide much more reliable capability, there's something about a hardwood handle that just feels right.  This photo shows an example of a 1970's vintage axe recently restored in one of of OMNA's woodshops.  We used a hickory sledgehammer handle custom crafted to fit the axe head.  The original handle is also shown, having cracked after 40 years of service.

This refurbished axe came in handy recently on our "Leadership in the Valley" staff ride on the Appalachian Trail in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia.  60 % of the trail in the northern devision was snow and ice covered.

Here's the brass and stainless steel point we used from Veritas.

AHIMTA Conference

We enjoyed seeing many old friends and making new ones at the annual AHIMTA conference in Charleston SC in mid-November last year.

Thanks to Brian Fennessy and Dan Kleinman for presenting with us on L-580 opportunities.

Illinois State Police

Thanks to the Illinois State Police for spending a day with us discussing operational leadership. We thoroughly enjoyed your hospitality and learned a lot about your operations.  We hope you enjoyed the exercise as a break from normal classroom routine.

We look forward to a return trip in the Fall!

Leadership in the Valley Staff Hike
This past March we enjoyed a week of hiking along the Appalachian Trail in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia with 12 midshipmen from USNA and two USNA staff members.  We studied Jackson's 1862 Valley Campaign to include the Battles of Winchester, Front Royal, Cross Keys, and Port Republic.  We were joined by three retired officers who graduated USNA in 1967 and 1970 for a barbecue dinner on the trail after a pouring-down rainstorm.  After a very windy night, we awoke the next morning to wind-chill temperatures recorded at -14 degrees F.

Future Operations:  We are looking forward to...
  • Participating at the FDNY Incident Management Team conference in April.
  • L-580 in May at Gettysburg.
  • South Canyon Staff Ride with Redding Interagency Hotshots in May.
  • Supporting Noble County Indian Sheriff's Office in June.
  • Supporting USNA Team Captains at Gettysburg in July.
  • Little Big Horn Staff Ride for HRO in October.
  • USNA Masters Program Overland Campaign Staff Ride in October.
  • L-580 Fall Course at Gettysburg in November.
