The Southern commander [Lee] having brought his troops up to the position he had selected, communicated without reserve to his lieutenants his general plan, and then gave frankly into their hands the conduct of the fight.
The lesson should be impressed upon all officers who may have the direction of any military operation, however insignificant:
1. Make up your mind clearly as to the course you intend to pursue.
2. Let your plan be as simple as possible; well defined both as to the means to be employed and the objective aimed at.

Overland, Petersburg, and Appomattox
This past October, OMNA supported the USNA LEAD Program with our annual weekend-long staff ride from Wilderness to Appomattox. We were honored to have MajGen Don Gardner USMC (Ret), Past President of Marine Corps University, join us for discussions at City Point to discuss the Petersburg Campaign.
