The 12 Steps of Professionalism

If you have been in any of my courses then you have heard me talk about these twelve steps before. As long as you follow me you will continue to hear about the steps. Why? The reason you will continue to hear about these steps is that it they are the key to making money on the road. Some points save you money and other points make you money. Combining these points is the real key to moving yourself into the top twenty percent of your fleet as a professional driver. Moving into the top twenty percent will help you have a successful career. To learn more about the Twenty Percent Club check out the August newsletter.

The reason this list is so important is that these items are timeless in their relevancy and will always be important to this industry and others. The trick to using the twelve points is to not just read them, but practice them on a regular basis. You will already be good at some of them, but may need improvement on others. Don't worry about them or feel that if you don't conquer them in a week that you are doomed. You will fail at them, you will fall back into old ways, but if you continue to work on the ones that are in need of improvement then you will succeed. Many of the steps are very small and you may wonder how they can make a difference in your career but they do.

Patience, respect, ownership, friendly, integrity, and negotiable are all soft skills to do with the person directly. These are things that no one will ever get right all the time and often depend on others and their reactions. These steps will take continuous work and will be relevant in all that you do.

Equipment, safety, orderly, accountable, strategic, and license are all industry related and can be trained for improvement. These steps are more to do with the truck or the driver and are the more practical skills of the job.

Many of these steps cross over and duplicate in importance. For instance "Ownership" is both the crash indicator and your focus on how you handle or view and career. The one thing I can promise you is that each of these steps have either saved me money or made me money. The little things you do are what make you money in transportation. Two drivers working for the same company, doing the same run will have very different run times, delays, and trip factors based on whether they are organized, experienced, and determined. That is why you can't judge the success of your career based on what someone else does in their career. So how can you find out the details of each step and what you can do you can do to improve?

The easiest way unless you took good notes in one of my classes is to join The Lead Pedal Network and view the twelve videos that are available explaining each step and how I made money or saved me money in my career. Once you have viewed the videos and found which steps require attention then the next step is to start practicing on making them better.
