Rocket Into Scouting
|
Rocket Into Scouting is the Cradle of Liberty Council's coordinated fall membership campaign with the aims of simplifying the sign-up process, strengthening our programs, and improving youth and family recruitment and retention. Most importantly, it's about FUN!
Please visit the Rocket Into Scouting page at colbsa.org/rocket for a host of resources to help your unit plan for the campaign. Check out the timeline, frequently asked questions, and other materials available to help you get ready to launch!
Next Steps for Cub Scout Packs:
- Mark Wednesday, September 30 in your calendars.
- If your pack leadership hasn't meet with your district executive to review and commit to the plan, please schedule that meeting prior to the end of this month.
- Recruit a coordinator for your pack.
- Working with your district membership chair and district executive, secure a location (preferably your local school or other highly-visible location) for the September 30 sign-up night.
- Attend a webinar or training session this summer for tips on conducting both the sign-up night on September 30 and parent orientation at your following meeting (we'll be publishing a schedule of training sessions next week).
- Remember, the coordinated sign-up night on September 30 is meant to enhance your pack's recruiting efforts, not replace them. Make sure your pack has a presence at community and back-to-school events prior to September 30. You can start recruiting now!
We're also putting the finishing touches on the turn-key rocket-themed meeting plans for dens/packs (and for troops and crews, too) that your unit can use in October. New Scouts will receive a rocket at their first meeting and your unit can purchase rockets at cost for existing members to use with the meeting plans. More details on purchasing rockets will be available before the end of the month.
to get updates throughout the summer.
If you have any questions, please contact your district membership chair, district executive, or Greg.Osborn@scouting.org.

5th Annual Cradle of Liberty Gala A Huge Success for Scouting!
|
A capacity crowd of more than 550 community and business leaders, Scouts, and Scouting supporters gathered at The Union League of Philadelphia last night to honor four outstanding individuals at the the 5th Annual Cradle of Liberty Gala. The council's signature special event raised a record $600,000 for Scouting in Philadelphia, Montgomery and Delaware Counties and was the largest fundraising event in the history of the Cradle of Liberty Council.
The Cradle of Liberty Gala recognizes business and community leaders who exemplify the ideals of the Scout Oath and Law. This event brings together members of the construction and real estate, health and pharmaceutical, communications and media, and legal and consulting industries to recognize leaders in their fields.
This year's honorees are:
- Distinguished Citizen Award: Craig L. Adams, President and Chief Executive Officer, PECO
- Communication "Good Scout" Award: Kevin Mazzucola, Executive Director, Automobile Dealers Association of Greater Philadelphia
- Construction & Real Estate "Good Scout" Award: Frank (Mack) Stulb, President, L.F. Driscoll Co.
- Health "Good Scout" Award: Robert H. Lux, Senior Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer, Temple University Health System (Bob also serves on our executive board as Council Treasurer and is an active long-time Scouter in Philadelphia).
Congratulations to the honorees and their families and thank you to our sponsors, event co-chairs, and committee members for making a very memorable night possible. A special thanks to WPVI 6abc's Sharrie Williams for serving as the master of ceremonies.

Pennsylvania Child Protective Services Law
|
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania passed a new law known as the Child Protective Services Law. The intent of this law is to protect the youth of Pennsylvania. All youth serving organizations within the Commonwealth are covered under this new law. Volunteers, registered and unregistered, in the Cradle of Liberty Council are affected in two ways; we are mandated child abuse reporters and required to provide background check clearances.
Our information page at colbsa.org/PAlaw has been updated as of June 11. Please visit the page for more information and for the steps volunteers need to take in order to get clearances and submit them to the Cradle of Liberty Council.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey so we can develop a website that meets your needs and serves as a platform to grow Scouting in the Cradle of Liberty Council.

Tufts University Character and Merit Project (CAMP) Research Study: Roll-out of Findings
|
In 2012, Tufts University began conducting a study in collaboration with the Cradle of Liberty Council. Funded through a grant from the John Templeton Foundation, the purpose of the study was to gauge the impact of the Boy Scouts of America programs on the development of elementary-school aged youth. Some of the questions examined during the course of this study included:
- Does Cub Scouting represent an exemplary character development program?
- Do youth who participate in Cub Scouting have higher levels of character than their peers who are not in Scouting?
- What characteristics of Cub Packs promote character development?
- What characteristics of Cub Packs promote Cub Scout retention?
All Scouts, families, and members of the community are invited to join Dr. Richard M. Lerner and members of Tufts University's Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development as they discuss findings from our three-year study on character development among Cub Scouts. The event will be held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 4010 City Ave, Philadelphia, on June 30th at 6:30pm.
All are welcome to attend, but space is limited. Therefore, please RSVP to ensure your seat! Light appetizers and refreshments will be provided.
Please RSVP online here
Additional information on the study can be found at www.tuftscampstudy.com.
