District Chairman's Minute

Hello Conestoga District,

This month, there are two dates I have to remember, Saint Valentine's day and my brides birthday. But February also means Scout Sunday, Blue & Gold banquets, and the Valley Forge Pilgrimage and Encampment. Every unit should find a way to celebrate Scout Sunday, even if your charter organization is not a Church... a Scout is Reverent.

The annual banquet is a way for units to celebrate Scouting's birthday and more importantly, to recognize Scouts for their achievements, and leaders for their service.

And, since 1913, Scouts have been gathering at Valley Forge to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of the troops who spent the winter and spring of 1777-78 training to become a professional army.

If your unit hasn't turned in your re-charter and Journey to Excellence paperwork, please contact Matt or BettyAnn or Dave or myself as soon as possible. There is NO grace period after your charter expires.

And never stop recruiting! New Scouts can join your Pack, Troop, or Crew all year round, there is no problem adding Scouts to your roster after the re-charter is completed.

Most units have already scheduled their Friends of Scouting presentation, and we will be reaching out to the few that aren't scheduled yet. Every unit is required to host a presentation for the parents of that unit's Scouts. Come to Roundtable to find out more about this year's program.

Troops should have their Order of the Arrow elections scheduled by their youth O.A. representative.

Our next Roundtable meeting will be on February 10, at Drexel Hill United Methodist Church. Please invite any new leaders or parents so they can learn more about what's going on, it would be great to have every Pack, Troop, and Crew represented.

Here are some upcoming highlights for the Conestoga District calendar:

Feb 10 - Conestoga District Roundtable meeting and OA, at Drexel Hill UMC

Feb 13-15 - Valley Forge Pilgrimage & Encampment, at Valley Forge National Park

Mar 14 - Conestoga District First Aid meet, at Allstate Training Center in Tinicum

Mar 27-29 - Conestoga District Spring camporee, at Camp Hart

In January, our district had one Eagle Scout Board of Review. Please join me in congratulating Conestoga District's newest Eagle Scout, Andrew Le of Troop 757. Congrats to our newest Eagle and his family.

Yours in Scouting,

Bob Booth

Friends of Scouting

The 2014-2015 Conestoga FOS is underway!  Our goal of $25k is already at 15%!  We have 80% of our units scheduled for an FOS presentation.  Way to go Conestoga!

The theme for this year's FOS Campaign is "Lighting the Way."  You can find details about the program at the council web site here:

https://www.colbsa.org/k2/friends-of-scouting.html

The Conestoga District FOS chairman for 2014-2015 is Mark Crater.  You can reach Mark at

m.crater2@gmail.com or see him at Roundtable

Merit Badge College

Cradle of Liberty's second annual Merit Badge College where a scout can earn up to four Merit Badges is scheduled for Saturdays April 11 and May 2, 2015 at Valley Forge Military Academy. The cost is $26 and includes lunch both days.

Merit Badge College is quickly reaching capacity. We had over 400 scouts sign up last week. There are only 500 slots available and registration will be closing when we hit that number. So don't delay if you have been procrastinating.

For additional information or a flyer contact Steve Perrone at Sperrone@ppciga.org

Cub Scout Program Updates

Exciting changes are coming to the Cub Scouting program that will make it simpler to execute for unit leaders and more fun for boys!

The changes were outlined in webcasts conducted on January 17. Those webcasts were recorded and are available for your use below. A "History of Cub Scouting" video was shown during the webcasts and is also available at the link below.

Den Chiefs
Did you know that the Packs in our district with Den Chiefs have an over 80% crossover rate to the Troops who provide the Den Chiefs while the Packs without Den Chiefs cross very few Scouts over to Troops at all?  We need to fix this!

Cub Leaders:
Does your Pack have a Den Chief?  At least 1 for each den?

Boy Scout Leaders:
Does your Troop send Den Chiefs to Packs? More than one Pack?

Boy Scouts need leadership experience and Cub Scouts need youth leaders. We have 19 Packs in Conestoga and not even half have Den Chiefs, let's fix that!

If you need help contacting a Pack or Troop, please let BettyAnn Atkinson know.
