Let's Get Out the Word About Scouting!

Get out those yard signs and posters, set-up a recruitment display or do something really creative to encourage youth and families to join Scouting!
  • Take a picture or video and post on our Facebook page or to Twitter: facebook.com/colbsa or tweet @colbsa - use hastag #beascout
  • Make sure to tell us the unit type and number (e.g. Cub Scout Pack 123) and location of the sign or display.
  • The council membership committee will select winners and results will be posted on October 15. The top winning unit will receive a $50 gift card to the Scout Shop/ ScoutStuff.org and runners-up will receive a $25 gift card.

Is Your Unit's BeAScout.org Pin Up-to-Date?

BeAScout.org is used extensively in local and national marketing materials, so it's critical that your unit's contact information and details are current so families can find you. Unit leaders (Cubmasters, Scoutmasters etc.), committee chairs and chartered organization representatives have access to update the information through MyScouting.org.

Philadelphia Encampment


The 2nd Annual Philadelphia Encampment is just one month away! This year's event will offer exciting programs for both Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, including merit badges, junior leader training and our exciting new Webelos program, Project Crossover.

Philadelphia Encampment - Staff Needed 

The Philadelphia Encampment is coming up fast, and we are looking for top notch, well-rounded Scouts, and adult leaders to help with the program at the Philadelphia Encampment. We are also specifically asking for help with our shooting sports program and are seeking adult leaders who are U.S.A. Archery Certified or are Certified Archery Range Masters.

This is a great opportunity for service hours for either your troop or school.

Staff will be provided with tent space in the staff area, meals, staff t-shirt, as well as a special staff gift.  If you would like to serve on the Encampment staff please contact Ryan Murphy at rmurphy9393@yahoo.com or 215-913-6345. Fall Fest

 

 

Who: All Cub Scouts and their families

What: A fun-filled day in camp featuring 10 activity stations and includes lunch

Where: Musser Scout Reservation; Camp Hart Dining Hall; 1125 Camp Road, Pennsburg, PA 18073

When: Fall Fest is a combination of six 1-day events across three weekends. The dates are October 18, 19, 25, 26 and Nov 1, 2

Cost: $20 for Scouts and siblings, FREE for new Cub Scouts, $5 for Adults

Capacity: 288 Scouts and siblings per day

 

Activities will include:

BB range, archery, slingshots, apple chucking, pumpkin carving, relay races, cooking demo, nature, handicraft and much, much more!

 

New Cub Scouts who join in Fall 2014 get to attend one Fall Fest day for FREE!

Fall Fest - Staff Needed

The Fall Fest weekends are fast approaching, and we are looking for top-notch Scouts and Scouters to help provide the program for the Cubs that are excited to participate in the activities! Looking for service hours for school or Scouts? 

 

This is a great opportunity for several hours of service.

 

Fall Fest Weekends are October 17-19, 24-26 and October 31-November 2.

 

Staff will be given a campsite and all meals, so this is a great unit camping opportunity! If you or your troop are able to help serve as part of the event staff, please contact Dave LeBlanc at fallfestvolunteer@gmail.com

 

APEX Weekend: Ropes, Bows & Barrels

November 8 or 9

Come join us for a day of fun on the COPE course, archery range and rifle range! Scouts will have the opportunity to get a half-day taste of low COPE, either high COPE or climbing, and a half-day taste of rifle shooting with a .22 rifle and archery target shooting. All of this for just $25 for participants (youth and adults) or $8 for onlookers (includes lunch!). This event is open to all Boy Scouts and Venturers and is capped at 64 spots, so be sure to sign-up before registration fills-up!

2014 Scouting for Food

Food Collection - Saturday, November 15, 2014

On Saturday, November 8, 2014 Scouts and Leaders will be out in Philadelphia, Delaware and Montgomery Counties putting out Scouting for Food collection bags to as many houses as possible. Please keep track of the area your Unit distributes the Scouting for Food bags for pickup on November 15th.

On Saturday, November 15, 2014 the Scouts and Leaders will again be out to collect the generous donation of food by the good people of our communities.

After covering your area with Scouting go to www.colbsa.org/food and let us know how many youth and adults participated and on November 15th how many food items you collected.

Scouting for Food Bags are available through your district professional.

 

2014 Thanksgiving Day Parade

November 27, 2014
The Cradle of Liberty Council is honored to have 150 Scouts and Scouters march in the 6ABC Thanksgiving Day Parade. Please only register the number of Scouts & Scouters that have made a commitment to attend. We will be carrying Banners in front of Floats and Balloons, collecting food along the parade route and manning the Acme Float and NEED all that are registered in attendance. You will be assigned to one of these areas on the morning of the Parade.

Checking Availability and Making a Reservation

1. To check availability and make a reservation go to www.colbsa.org/rentals

2. Click on the "Book Now" Green Button for either Resica Falls Scout Reservation or Musser Scout Reservation.

3. Select a category: choose if you want a lodge or a tent site and then click on the facility you are interested in. It will highlight the facility and then you can check what openings exist for your weekend of choice. Availability is confirmed if the date blocks show in grey.

4. Select your arrival and departure dates by clicking on the appropriate dates, it will then give you a "reserve' button to click.  This will create a reservation box at the top right of the calendar with an orange check out box. Click there and follow the steps to complete your registration.

5. Use your current Doubleknot user ID and password. If do not have one you will need to create a profile-use your "Unit #, Council", and your contact information.

6. Follow the steps to check out and select the appropriate payment type-pay online with a credit card or mail in a payment.

Volunteers Needed - Friends and Do-Gooders Welcome!
Young Professional Scouts will be assisting with the 2nd Annual Philadelphia Encampment. We need 10-15 members and friends to join us to help serve lunch to some great kids Saturday, October 18th at the Lighthouse Field (Front and Erie Streets). 

Last year more than a dozen YPS members and friends attended. It's a great way to give back. We are seeking volunteers from 11 AM to 1 PM. Please contact Mark Saxon to RSVP.

The Archdiocesan Scout Retreat is being held this weekend, October 3-5 at Camp Hart. This is a great event for Catholic Scouts and Scouters to gather to discuss their faith and to learn about its practical application to life through the lens of Scouting.

Shofar Award

The National Jewish Committee on Scouting established the Shofar Award to recognize outstanding service by adults in the promotion of Scouting among Jewish youth. Just as the Shofar (Ram's Horn) calls people to the service of God, so the Shofar Award is a recognition of the individual who has answered the call to serve Jewish youth in Scouting. Self and spouse nominations will not be accepted.

Council Youth Protection Champion

Youth Protection is of paramount importance to the Boy Scouts of America and relies upon the shared involvement of everyone in Scouting. Recognizing that this commitment requires sustained vigilance, the BSA has continued to develop and enhance its efforts to protect youth. In support of this focus and awareness, the National Youth Protection Committee has initiated the Youth Protection Champions program.

 

The Cradle of Liberty Council is pleased to announce the appointment of Geoffrey F. Sasso to the position of Council Youth Protection Champion. In this role, Geoffrey will assist in recruiting Youth Protection leadership, support Youth Protection strategy development, assist in increasing the implementation of new Youth Protection programs, policies, and reports, and will ensure that Youth Protection training is available and presented various times throughout the year.

 

Geoffrey earned his Eagle Scout rank in 1999 while with Troop 240 in Bucks County, PA.  He is currently an attorney with a major Philadelphia law firm. In addition to his role as Youth Protection Champion, Geoffrey is also a member of the Council's Advisory Board and is the President and one of the co-founders of the Council's Young Professional Scouts alumni organization.

Health & Safety Tip of the Month: Storing, Handling and Using Chemical Fuels and Equipment

An adult knowledgeable about chemical fuels and equipment should always supervise youths involved in the storage, handling, and use of chemical fuels and equipment.

 

Operate and maintain chemical-fueled equipment according to the manufacturer's instructions and in facilities or areas only where and when permitted.

 

Using liquid fuels for starting any type of fire-including lighting damp wood, charcoal, and ceremonial campfires or displays-is prohibited.

 

No flames in tents. This includes burning any solid, liquid, gel, or gas fuel-including tents or teepees that feature or support stoves or fires; and any chemical-fueled equipment or catalytic heaters.

 

Store chemical fuels in their original containers or in containers designed for immediate use. Securely store any spare fuel away from sources of ignition, buildings, and tents.

 

During transport and storage, properly secure chemical fuel containers in an upright, vertical position.

2014 Adult Leader Training Requirements

All leaders on 2014 Cradle of Liberty Council charters must be position-specific trained, along with having current Youth Protection Training. This includes all Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters, Cubmasters and assistant Cubmasters, den leaders and assistant den leaders, Venturing crew advisors and assistant advisors, Varsity coaches and assistant coaches, Sea Scouting mates and skippers, committee chairs, and committee members.

  • All assistant Scoutmasters and assistant Venturing crew advisors must complete their basic training or they will not be registered in that position. Assistant Scoutmasters and assistant Venturing crew advisors age 21 and older can register and function as a member of the troop or crew committee if they choose to not complete their classroom-style leader training.
  • All Cub Scout leader training and committee training for both troops and packs is available online at myscouting.org.
  • Venturing committee training is expected to be available from BSA National in spring of 2014 and will be mandatory for crew committee members at that time.

By dedicating 30 minutes of your time to complete this training, we are helping to ensure a quality program for all of the youth we serve through Scouting.

2015 World Jamboree

The World Scout Jamboree is a Scouting jamboree of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, (WOSM) typically attended by several tens of thousands of Scouts from around the world, aged 14 to 17 every 4 years.

World Jamboree 2015

The 23rd World Scout Jamboree will take place at Kirara-hama, YamaguchiJapan in 2015. The theme will be 和 Wa: A Spirit of Unity. The kanji , meaning harmonyunity or togetherness, is also a part of the theme. Wa is also an early name for Japan.

Quality Unit Executive

The Cradle of Liberty Council is seeking service-minded, personable individuals with a commitment to the ideals of the BSA who are interested in having a positive impact on the lives of local elementary school-aged boys by serving as a Quality Unit Executive. The successful candidate will have a thorough understanding of all aspects of the Cub Scout program, have gone through the program as a youth and/or have had a son go through the program, have experience as a registered Cub Scout leader, and have ties both within and outside of the local Scouting community.

 

The Quality Unit Executive position is a full-time, paid position that involves assisting local Cub Scout packs with unit leader selection, leader training, membership recruitment and retention, unit program planning including fundraising and advancement, and camp promotion. This service role as a coach, counselor, mentor, and teacher requires a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, personal transportation, and the flexibility to work evenings and weekends.

 

Training and mileage reimbursement is provided, as well as paid vacation and holidays, and a full benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, 403B plus employer match and a retirement plan.
