It's Fall Recruitment Season!

School's in session or will be soon, so that means it's time to recruit families to experience the fun and adventure of Scouting!

Thousands of new Cub Scouts and their families will be joining this fall. The membership committee and professional staff are hard at work to ensure that each and every youth who wants to join the program has the opportunity to do so. Word-of-mouth is still the most effective recruitment method, so please make sure to recommend Scouting to others and encourage them to sign-up.

Although most new Scouts will be joining Cub Scouting this fall, this time of year is still a great opportunity to recruit Boy Scouts and Venturers. Webelos transition is right around the corner, so make sure your unit has a plan. The resources of the Cradle of Liberty Council stand ready to assist.

If your Cub Scout pack has not received its Fall Recruitment Kit yet, please contact your district membership chair or professional. Also make sure to let them know the details of your Join Scouting Rally. The council office will coordinate school talks, produce and distribute fliers, and assist with other recruitment methods.

We'll be announcing a "Show Us How You Recruit" contest on our Facebook page early next week. Get out those yard signs, posters or do something really creative, post pictures or videos of your display and win some cool stuff for your unit! Like our page so you'll get the details when they're released!

Please visit colbsa.org/recruitment for the latest Cub Scout recruitment resources. Thank you for your support as we work together to get as many youth and families as possible involved in the best youth development program around!

Don't forget that every new Cub Scout who joins this fall gets to attend a day of Fall Fest at Musser Scout Reservation FOR FREE!

Please visit colbsa.org/musserevents for details.

Popping Off!

For those units that did not take part in the $10K Show and Sell Order but plan on participating in Show and Sell, please be sure to log in to the Trail's End Popcorn System and place your unit's order right away to ensure that it is delivered on September 20! If you have any issues logging in, please contact your district popcorn kernel or professional, call our office (610-688-6900), or email popcorn@colbsa.org.

If you're a unit popcorn kernel (coordinator), make sure to check out our weekly email newsletter, Kernel Connection. If you didn't receive the first edition on September 2 and want to be on the mailing list, please click on the newsletter and select "Join Our Mailing List."

Thank You for Attending the Council-Wide Roundtable!

Thank you to the more than 230 Scouters who attended the 2014 Council-Wide Roundtable on August 25!

If you haven't had a chance yet, please take a few minutes to complete a survey to let us know how you think it went so we can improve this event and others like it for the future. Your input is appreciated!

Here are links to some of the resources distributed at the event:

Scouting for Life Blood Drive

Thank You!
A huge thank you to the hundreds of donors who participated in the Scouting for Life/Mascaro Memorial Blood Drives over the past three weekends. Your generosity helped save lives!

Patches will be distributed to participants over the next several weeks and we'll have a full report of the results once everything is tabulated.

Units: please don't forget to record your service hours towards promoting the drive, helping at a location and/or giving blood on the Journey to Excellence Service Hours Reporting website.

There's still a critical need for blood donations, so please consider registering for a drive near you through the American Red Cross website (www.redcrossblood.org) or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Thank you for making a difference this summer!

Philadelphia Encampment

Is your unit looking for an exciting  program opportunity for your troop or pack? Then save the date and sign-up for the 2014 Philadelphia Encampment happening on October 17-19 at Lighthouse Field. A Message from Tufts University

Tufts Logo

Hello Pack Leaders! Thank you for welcoming members of our team to this year's Kick-Off, and for sparing a few minutes of time for our announcements. We had a blast getting to know new leaders and sharing updates about the Tufts-BSA Study. We wanted to remind you again that some of you will receive study materials from us in the mail in the very near future. Thank you again for your continued participation in the study, and for supporting the study. Best of luck as you begin this year of Scouting.

2014 Adult Leader Training Requirements

All leaders on 2014 Cradle of Liberty Council charters must be position-specific trained, along with having current Youth Protection Training. This includes all Scoutmasters and assistant Scoutmasters, Cubmasters and assistant Cubmasters, den leaders and assistant den leaders, Venturing crew advisors and assistant advisors, Varsity coaches and assistant coaches, Sea Scouting mates and skippers, committee chairs, and committee members.

  • All assistant Scoutmasters and assistant Venturing crew advisors must complete their basic training or they will not be registered in that position. Assistant Scoutmasters and assistant Venturing crew advisors age 21 and older can register and function as a member of the troop or crew committee if they choose to not complete their classroom-style leader training.
  • All Cub Scout leader training and committee training for both troops and packs is available online at myscouting.org.
  • Venturing committee training is expected to be available from BSA National in spring of 2014 and will be mandatory for crew committee members at that time.

By dedicating 30 minutes of your time to complete this training, we are helping to ensure a quality program for all of the youth we serve through Scouting.

Shofar Award

The National Jewish Committee on Scouting established the Shofar Award to recognize outstanding service by adults in the promotion of Scouting among Jewish youth. Just as the Shofar (Ram's Horn) calls people to the service of God, so the Shofar Award is a recognition of the individual who has answered the call to serve Jewish youth in Scouting. Self and spouse nominations will not be accepted.

Health & Safety Tip of the Month: Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse

The Boy Scouts of America places the greatest importance on creating the most secure environment possible for our youth members. To maintain such an environment, the BSA has developed numerous procedural and leadership selection policies and provides parents and leaders with resources for all levels of the program.

Being a leader in the BSA is a privilege, not a right. The quality of the program and the safety of our youth members call for high-quality adult leaders. The adult application requests background information that should be checked by the unit committee or the chartered organization before accepting an applicant for unit leadership. Additionally, national criminal background checks are conducted on all adult leaders through the council.

Youth Protection Training is required for all registered volunteers in the Boy Scouts of America and must be taken every two years. New adult leaders cannot register unless they submit proof with their application that they have completed Youth Protection Training, which is available online at MyScouting.org.

All persons involved in Scouting shall report to local authorities any good faith suspicion or belief that any child is or has been abused. No person may abdicate this reporting responsibility to any other person.

Steps to Reporting Child Abuse:

  1. Ensure the child is in a safe environment.
  2. In cases of child abuse or medical emergencies, call 911 immediately. In addition, if the suspected abuse is in the Scout's home or family, you are required to contact the local child abuse hotline.
  3. Notify the Scout executive or his/her designee.
