2014 Training Requirements

All leaders on 2014 Cradle of Liberty Council Charters must be position specific trained, along with having current Youth Protection Training.  This includes all Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters, Cubmasters and Assistant Cubmasters, Den Leaders and Assistant Den Leaders, Venturing Crew Advisors and Assistant Advisors, Varsity Coaches and Assistant Coaches, Ship Mates and Skippers, Committee Chairs, and Committee Members.

All Assistant Scoutmasters and Assistant Venturing Crew Advisors must complete their basic training or they will not be registered in that position.  Assistant Scoutmasters and Assistant Venturing Crew Advisors age 21 and older can register and function as a member of the Troop or Crew Committee if they choose to not complete their classroom-style leader training.

BSA Membership Increase

Top leadership from Scouting Councils across the nation gathered together during the last week of August at an annual meeting to discuss relevant matters facing the Scouting Movement.  Among these topics were improving volunteer resources and program development.  The National Council of the Boy Scouts of America has been working to create tools and resources aimed at enabling volunteers to better organize and operate strong, healthy units, as well as preserving Scouting's relevancy for the next 100 years.  Some of these advancements are:

Cradle of Liberty Merit Badge College and Counselors

Only five slots remain for Cradle of Liberty's first Council Wide Merit Badge College on Saturdays February 22 and March 15, 2014 at the Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades on RT 352 near the Granite Run Mall. A scout can earn up to four Merit Badges by completing pre requisites in advance of the first session, completing additional requirements between the two sessions, and of course by attending and participating in the two Saturday class sessions.Forty two badges are being offered (click on this link to see the flyer which has a link to registration) including seven Eagle Required Badges, many STEM badges, and other seldom offered badges. There is a limit of 280 scouts so remaining space is limited. Be flexible with your selections as some badges have already reached the limit of 20 scouts to a class. In response to your requests we have added second Game Design and Sustainability class and third Citizenship in the Nation and Emergency Preparedness class. Most badges have Pre Requirements, for example First Aid is a pre requisite for Emergency Preparedness, so check the pre requirement link before selecting classes. The cost is ten dollars per scout and you will need to bring a bag lunch.

Please also check out these links, including latest perquisites and suggestions and recommendations.

Norman Rockwell: Boy Scouts at the Reading Public Museum

Through January 12, 2014, the Reading Public Museum is celebrating Norman Rockwell's life-long collaboration with the BSA. This exhibition features selected works by America's quintessential illustrator, Norman Rockwell. Drawing upon the archival collections of the Norman Rockwell Museum, as well as additional oil-on-canvas paintings from the National Scouting Museum,

this special exhibition offers a glimpse into the artist's body of work for the Boy Scouts of America. With over 75 pieces including paintings, drawings, gelatin silver prints, book covers, personal artist's supplies, early Scouting artifacts and more, this fascinating installation celebrates the organization's century-plus history. At the same time, the museum is also hosting an additional display of Scouting memorabilia titled Scouting Through the Years, presented in partnership with the World of Scouting Museum. The museum is located at 500 Museum Road, Reading, PA. For more information go to:   http://www.readingpublicmuseum.org/museum/exhibits/exhibitions/norman_rockwell.php

Courage. Sacrifice. Selflessness. Patriotism.

Do those words describe an act of service performed by a Scout, Venturer or Scouter you know?

Chances are, they do. And you'll need to act quickly to recognize this person by nominating him or her to the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation's Citizen Honors awards. The nomination deadline is Jan. 10, 2014.

The same foundation that honors acts of wartime valor (with the Congressional Medal of Honor) seeks to also celebrate "unsung heroes" or citizens who've selflessly put the lives of others first through an act of heroism. And, as Scouts pledge to "help other people at all times," it's likely that you know of a Scout, Venturer or fellow Scouter deserving this great distinction.

Nominate this person today - the Jan. 10 deadline is approaching fast. Nominees must be age 18 or older, and this person's act of selflessness must have occurred in the last three years. Find more details regarding the nominating criteria here.

Under the leadership of Ed Grivner and Staci Emery, the Dens met at Upper Dublin High School to learn about the magic of television. Tour Guide Jason Trantas showed the Tigers how the control room speaks to the studio, the importance of lighting and sound and how the green wall can transform reality.

BSA Today Health and Safety Tip

A letter to the FDA from a group of medical experts expressed doubts that energy drinks are safe for youth.  An article in the March 2011 issue of Pediatrics revealed that, in addition to heart risk, energy drinks have been linked to seizures, behavioral disorders, and obesity in young people. Until it is determined that energy drinks are safe, the latest BSA Health and Safety newsletter notes that experts recommend youth use caution when consuming them.

During 2012 more than 3,000 Scouts received $100 grants for their Eagle Scout service projects through the generosity of the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation.
