BSA Membership Increase

Top leadership from Scouting Councils across the nation gathered together during the last week of August at an annual meeting to discuss relevant matters facing the Scouting Movement.  Among these topics were improving volunteer resources and program development.  The National Council of the Boy Scouts of America has been working to create tools and resources aimed at enabling volunteers to better organize and operate strong, healthy units, as well as preserving Scouting's relevancy for the next 100 years.  Some of these advancements are:

Boy Scouts Awarded Grant to protect Golden-winged Warbler

WAYNE, PA (October 8, 2013) - The Cradle of Liberty Council of the Boy Scouts of America has been awarded a federal conservation grant through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) to create and improve the habitat for the golden-winged warbler, an at-risk species, at its Resica Falls Scout Camp in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania.

The golden-winged warbler (Vermivora chrysoptera) is a migratory species that breeds in the Northeastern United States, preferring early successional habitats for nesting. The vast forested lands, grasslands, and forb-rich landscape of the Appalachian Mountains was once considered a population stronghold for the golden-winged warbler. Today, however, the population is at risk to be listed as an endangered species. Recently-abandoned farm fields and clear-cuts are ideal habitats; however, they do not last long, and the warbler often quickly disappears from an area.

Heroism Award

Christopher Limbert of East Greenville Troop 108

Last November, Scout Christopher Limbert of East Greenville Troop 108 arrived at his job at a local dog kennel to start another typical work day on the weekend. He noticed his boss was not working in the kennel like she typically is. The kennel was on the same property as the owner's house. Because Chris was a Scout, the owner trusted Chris with a key to the back door to her home.

After knocking for a while, Chris entered the house finding the owner in a chair not feeling well. Despite his boss's reassurances that she was fine, using his Scout Skills, Chris knew there was something wrong and recognized his boss was having a stroke. Chris treated her for a stroke and called 911. Paramedics arrived and rushed her to the hospital.

Doctors explained to her that of Chris had not acted in the manner that he did, she  very well may not be alive today.

Chris is to be awarded the National Boy Scouts of America Heroism Award at his Eagle Ceremony on October 27th.

Luke Mingioni  Pack 260

This incident occurred outside of Luke's home.  Luke was outside his house and his mother was working in the garage.  Luke and his mother both heard a loud noise.  Luke ran into the garage and told his mom that a man had fallen off of the roof of a nearby house.  Mom at first did not believe Luke who was six years old and a Tiger Cub at the time.  Luke persisted in telling his mom what he had seen and she decided to go with him to check out his story.

They found the man on his deck.  Mr. Till was unconscious.  Mom sent Luke to tell his older brother and older sister to call 911.  Luke again had to persuade his brother and sister that he was telling the truth.  They called 911.  The police and EMS arrived shortly thereafter.

Luke knew from his scouting experience that Mr. Till should not be moved and should be immobilized.  He assisted his mother in bandaging the man's head and in immobilizing him until emergency help arrived.

Luke told the emergency team that Number 27 in his Cub Scout book is to have an Emergency Plan.

The man was treated at the medical facility for traumatic head injury.

Join the Movement to End Texting and Driving in Philadelphia

To put an end to texting and driving, AT&T launched the It Can Wait campaign, which Cradle of Liberty Council is proud to be a part of. When it comes to texting and driving, the attitude of "do as I say, not as I do" widely persists. Today, more drivers than ever recognize the dangers of texting while driving, but continue to engage in this risky behavior. Originally introduced in 2009, the program aims to educate millions of wireless users, employees and the general public - particularly teens -about the dangers of texting while driving. In 2012, "No Text on Board" pledge day on September 19th brought consumers, policymakers, groups like ours, and companies together to help end this dangerous behavior.

This year, we're excited to help take the It Can Wait movement one step further with "Drive 4 Pledges Day"on September 19, 2013. On this day, It Can Wait advocates will be asking every driver to join us in making a personal commitment not to text and drive - and recruiting others to do the same. To succeed in making texting and driving a thing of the past, we're going to need everybody's help.
