JOIN THE PHILADELPHIA ENCAMPMENT ON OCTOBER 11-13TH

On the weekend of October 11th-13th, for the first time more than 30 years, the boy scouts of Philadelphia will assemble for a special city-based camping experience at the Inaugural Philadelphia Encampment Camporee, located at the Lighthouse Field in Philadelphia. Scouts and scouters from traditional boy scout units, along with a contingent of Scoutreach youth, will come together for a weekend of camping, scout activities, competitions, and overall fun. Participants in the weekend event will also enjoy activities ranging core scout skills and advancement, to archery, first aid competitions, and special pioneering features such as a rope bridge and a working two-story Ferris wheel.

"The 15 acre Lighthouse Field is a wonderful place to have a camporee", commented Peter Walts-chairman for the event. " The field is been a part of Philadelphia sports history for close to 100 years, it's the ideal spot to host a successful weekend program like this one."

"I'm also happy to announce that we have been able to reconfigure the camping and program areas so that now we can offer registration beyond Triune, Roosevelt and Northern districts to include scout units from the suburban districts. Space is limited, and will allocated on a first come/first served basis, so if your troop is interested in joining us at the Encampment, please go to the website and register while there's still space available". Use this link to register today: https://www.colbsa.org/philadelphia-encampment/philadelphia-encampment.html

In addition to the Encampment, a weekend IOLS program is also being offered, with space limited to the first 50 participants to register. IOLS partipants should also register online using the Encampment link, and an additional $10 will also be assessed at the event to cover other costs for the training. Questions re: IOLS training should be directed to Mike Birkbeck directly at by email at: mbirbcpc463ddcol@hotmail.com , or by contacting your District Executive.

Fall Recruitment

Hope this article finds everyone well and enjoying this wonderful summer. As August rolls around we at Cradle of Liberty look to the fall and our busy recruitment season.

Many of you already have been chomping at the bit and sent us when you plan to have your "Sign up Night" or Roundup or Back to school night or one of the 100000 different names we have for recruitment night. If you haven't please send your District Executive an email of when you plan to have yours.

If this is new to you, let us know and we can walk you thru this fun process. If you feel your "big enough" please let us know as well. If you feel you can't handle any more kids because you don't have enough parents (everyone?) let us know and we will work with you to get more parents involved.  We are starting to schedule times to go into the schools and talk to the boys so the sooner you tell us when your recruitment night is the sooner we can lock up a "Boy Talk" in school.

We have some brand new flyers, posters, signs, bookmarks and giveaways for new Scouts so sign up for a recruitment event while these great supplies last!!!!

Thanks and as always we are here to serve you so please let us know how we can help.

Join the Movement to End Texting and Driving in Philadelphia

To put an end to texting and driving, AT&T launched the It Can Wait campaign, which Cradle of Liberty Council is proud to be a part of. When it comes to texting and driving, the attitude of "do as I say, not as I do" widely persists. Today, more drivers than ever recognize the dangers of texting while driving, but continue to engage in this risky behavior. Originally introduced in 2009, the program aims to educate millions of wireless users, employees and the general public - particularly teens -about the dangers of texting while driving. In 2012, "No Text on Board" pledge day on September 19th brought consumers, policymakers, groups like ours, and companies together to help end this dangerous behavior.

This year, we're excited to help take the It Can Wait movement one step further with "Drive 4 Pledges Day"on September 19, 2013. On this day, It Can Wait advocates will be asking every driver to join us in making a personal commitment not to text and drive - and recruiting others to do the same. To succeed in making texting and driving a thing of the past, we're going to need everybody's help.
