Fall Recruitment
|
Hope this article finds everyone well and enjoying this wonderful summer. As August rolls around we at Cradle of Liberty look to the fall and our busy recruitment season.
Many of you already have been chomping at the bit and sent us when you plan to have your "Sign up Night" or Roundup or Back to school night or one of the 100000 different names we have for recruitment night. If you haven't please send your District Executive an email of when you plan to have yours.
If this is new to you, let us know and we can walk you thru this fun process. If you feel your "big enough" please let us know as well. If you feel you can't handle any more kids because you don't have enough parents (everyone?) let us know and we will work with you to get more parents involved. We are starting to schedule times to go into the schools and talk to the boys so the sooner you tell us when your recruitment night is the sooner we can lock up a "Boy Talk" in school.
We have some brand new flyers, posters, signs, bookmarks and giveaways for new Scouts so sign up for a recruitment event while these great supplies last!!!!
Thanks and as always we are here to serve you so please let us know how we can help.

2013 Continental District Cub Day Camp
|
The Continental District held their annual Cub Scout Day Camp at Camp Hart the last week of June. As campers showed up early Monday morning, they were welcomed by eager Parent-Den-Leaders, Youth Volunteers, and Program Leaders.
The theme this year was Native American. Ms. Carol May, Program Director, out did herself again this year, but not without the help of all the Program Leaders. The campers had the chance to create tee-pees to show their tribe names and what they had learned about their tribe during the week. Their knowledge of their tribe was also reflected in the ornaments they displayed on the famous Spirit Stick. The Spirit Stick encourages dens to show the Cub Scout Spirit by singing songs, chants, and cheers either they have found or created themselves. Each day the winner of the Spirit Stick was decided by a spirit shout off. Mr. Jeff Miller had the honor of presenting the Spirit Stick each afternoon.
Each rank had individualized tasks to be completed each day in order to earn a Beltloop, Pin, or Activity Badge. All Bears earned the Whittling Chip award and even some new Webelos and Arrow of Light earned the award as well!
On the Parade Field, American Indian games were held along with Sports. At Handicraft, paintings and clay projects were created. Thank you to Mr. Kevin Crilley and Mrs. Stacey Spizziri as Nature was buzzing! Campers also earned the Swimming, Fishing, Nutrition, Archery, BB Guns, and Music Beltloops; and the Aquanaut, Showman, Readyman, and Forester Activity Badges; and a WHOLE LOT of book achievements.
Scouts also had fun with a special challenge. SPL Gracie Cooper, met up with dens along the trail to time them to see how long it would take to build a tee-pee out of cardboard planks. Bear Den 1 took the win with a time of 1:36 and each camper received a special bead for their efforts!
Friday morning brought us a very special guest. Mr. Brett Davis, Troop 108 and Order of the Arrow, astounded campers and volunteers alike when he dressed as an authentic Lenape Indian and migrated around Camp sharing his knowledge with campers and engaging in multiple photo ops.
During the Friday Afternoon Program, the dens put on skits and sang songs and cheers along with the Den Chiefs performances. The campers were SO excited to have a visit from Mr. Cannon, who could not attend Camp this year due to having to be a responsible grown up.
A HUGE thank you to Mr. Jeff Miller, Camp Cubmaster; Mrs. Karen Bieber, Administrative everything; Mr. Kris Kepplinger, Gator driver extraordinaire; and Mrs. Maryann Leary, Health Officer for their participation and contributions at Camp! Thank you SO much to all of the Parent Volunteers for their time and talents! Thank you to the parents who allowed us to have the best time with your campers for a week at Day Camp! None of this works with any of you! Oh and one last BIG thank you to everyone for putting up with Carol all week!

Washington District Day Camp
|
This past week we had an amazing group of volunteers and scouts enjoy a tremendous experience at the
Washington District Day Camp, held at the Bryn Athyn School. We had over 175 scouts attend with nearly 100 youth and adult volunteers working night and day to ensure the best possible program. Our camp saw an amazing shooting range with BB guns, Wrist Rockets, and Archery, capped with a Top Shot Competition. Our Scouts not only experienced a strong Sports, Art, Nature, and Scoutcraft program, but also were engaged by the Briar Bush Nature Center, Leave No Trace Trainers, The Bryn Athyn Fire Department, The Glencairn Museum, and Ms. Sheila Arnold. Our Scouts fired off rockets, played Native American games, built "warrior shields," baskets, and totem poles, and painted each other's faces in the warrior tradition.
You are invited to check out our Day Camp's photos on our Facebook site (www.facebook.com/washingtonbsa) and clicking on our Photo Albums.

2013 Wood Badge Training - Help NEEDED
|

Thanks to all the Scouters who offered help to our Scouter Participant, Brian Woznicki, who will need help and support to attend and complete this year's Wood Badge Course, September 7, 8, 9 and October 12, 13, & 14 at Musser Scout Reservation.
The Wood Badge Staff is still recruiting as we still do not have sufficient paid participants to hold the course. We are in need of 6 to 8 additional sign ups. If you are a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity, or Venturing Leader and have not completed Wood Badge Training please consider participating. For Boy Scout, Varsity and Venturing leaders your Wood Badge Training will compliment the NYLT training provided to your youth, Wood Badge will teach you what your youth have learned.
Remember, it is about the youth.
Every Scout deserves a trained leader.
We sincerely hope we get the needed signups by the end of July in order for the course to proceed.
The Course will be conducted September 7, 8, & 9th and October 12, 13, & 14th, 2013. The Cost is $250.00. Any questions please contact Gerry Myers, Course Director at 215-815-1865 or thepamyers@msn.com and we will respond.
