Tufts-led study to evaluate Boy Scouts impact on development

2013 National Scout Jamboree

After years of planning the 2013 National Jamboree is at hand. Fort A P Hill near Fredericksburg Virgi nia had been the host of the eight prior National Jamborees between 1981 through 2010 however the current Jamboree will serve as the grand opening of the fourth BSA National High Ad

venture Base, the new Summit Bechtel Reserve. The Summit is located near Beckley in Southern West Virginia. The BSA purchased 10,300 acres of rugged land thanks to a generous $50,000,000 gift from the Bechtel family, and is adjacent to another 70,000 acres of protected land in the New River Gorge National Park.

The Cradle of Liberty Council sent nine troops and one Crew, or 370 scouts on July 15 to participate in the inaugural Jamboree at the Summit. The Summit will not only host all future National Jamborees but has been awarded the 2019 World Jamboree as well. The area is well known for its white water and rock climbing and many of our scouts will participate in these activities. Three days are mapped out for each unit. All scouts will participate in a Day of Service, where they will be bused to a rural community in Appalachians to assist the locals with a service project. Another day will spent hiking to the Garden Ground which is the summit of the Summit, and finally a day will be spent at Technology Quest. The rest of the time the scouts are free to participate in their individually chosen curriculum activities and any other activities that interest them. The scouts will also attend the fabulous Arena shows, whi ch with visitors, will have 80,000 attendees.

Our scouts will be meeting fellow scouts from all over the United States, and the world. Over 40,000 scouts have signed to be a part of this National Jamboree. We wish our scouts a safe, fun, and rewarding experience.

Washington District Day Camp

This past week we had an amazing group of volunteers and scouts enjoy a tremendous experience at the Washington District Day Camp, held at the Bryn Athyn School. We had over 175 scouts attend with nearly 100 youth and adult volunteers working night and day to ensure the best possible program. Our camp saw an amazing shooting range with BB guns, Wrist Rockets, and Archery, capped with a Top Shot Competition. Our Scouts not only experienced a strong Sports, Art, Nature, and Scoutcraft program, but also were engaged by the Briar Bush Nature Center, Leave No Trace Trainers, The Bryn Athyn Fire Department, The Glencairn Museum, and Ms. Sheila Arnold. Our Scouts fired off rockets, played Native American games, built "warrior shields," baskets, and totem poles, and painted each other's faces in the warrior tradition.

You are invited to check out our Day Camp's photos on our Facebook site (www.facebook.com/washingtonbsa) and clicking on our Photo Albums.

The Wood Badge Staff is still recruiting as we still do not have sufficient paid participants to hold the course. We are in need of 6 to 8 additional sign ups.  If you are a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity, or Venturing Leader and have not completed Wood Badge Training please consider participating. All of us want to provide the finest program for the Youth in our units. To accomplish this BSA recognizes that Leadership Training is key. Wood badge is the premier training course, the course is designed to fulfill the needs of course participants. Participants learn techniques that make them better leaders, and how to lead groups to achieve objectives.

For Boy Scout, Varsity and Venturing leaders your Wood Badge Training will compliment the NYLT training provided to your youth, Wood Badge will teach you what your youth have learned.

Remember, it is about the youth.

Every Scout deserves a trained leader.

We sincerely hope we get the needed signups by the end of July in order for the course to proceed.

The Course will be conducted September 7, 8, & 9th and October 12, 13, & 14th, 2013. The Cost is $250.00. Any questions please contact Gerry Myers, Course Director at 215-815-1865 or thepamyers@msn.com and we will respond.
