Asking Deeper Questions
Kalpana (Rose) M. Kumar, M.D.

Traditionally, medical histories are taken from patients to arrive at a diagnosis and manage the associated symptoms.  In this article, Dr. Kumar challenges these "mechanical" methods of routine, reductionistic office visits and encourages doctors and patients to have the desire, curiosity, and longing to connect and truly learn about the deeper issues that drive illness.  Read this stimulating article that uses methods to uncover causality and offers solutions for true healing, not merely symptom management.  A patient's symptoms make much more sense when seen through a larger and deeper context that validates and transforms.

A Book Review by Stephanie Delmore, MA, LPC

Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood
, by Lisa Damour

This book is an important read for parents with pre-teen and teenage daughters! The author is an experienced researcher and a practicing clinician.  She has much to say about the new challenges (social media) teenage girls face, that differ dramatically from what their mother's dealt with. And for women who are going through their own mid-life issues as their daughters transition into adulthood, the situation can create a dynamic where mothers project their own anxieties onto their daughters. Stephanie says: "This book may provide a valuable tool for mothers to figure out what in this process is her daughter's own developmental work, and where she (mother) can act as mentor and guide."
Acupuncture & Respiratory Disease
Aimee Brown, LAc, MSOM

Did you know that acupuncture is a good treatment choice for diseases affecting the lungs and respiration?  It can help a minor respiratory, viral cold/cough, or a case of asthma, bronchitis, and something as serious and chronic as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD ).  If you or anyone you know suffers from any of these types of respiratory conditions you must read on.

Companions for the Journey
Boris Matthews, PhD

In this brief essay, Boris discusses a couple books that make wonderful companions to aid and orient us on our "journey to self."  These books can remind us what a meaningful life is. The two authors, Carl G Jung and Robert Johnson, are spokespersons for the ancient viewpoint that what is manifest in the world begins in the "inner" world.  This is the first of three essays Dr. Matthews will be writing over the next few months. Don't miss them!

Start Spring Off Right - Eat Asparagus!
Sarah Philipp, Certified Holistic Nutritionist

Spring is so much more hopeful than the 1st of January, so why not make (or renew) your New Year's Resolutions now?  What should your Spring resolutions be?  Sarah suggests you keep it simple. Try a different vegetable, ensuring variety in your diet. With variety comes better health.  Asparagus is one of the first Spring vegetables harvested in Southeastern Wisconsin - so she's provided a recipe that makes asparagus prep quick, easy, and end results yummy. Take a look.

Beauty Counter
Wouldn't you like to know?  Unfortunately, many of us don't know exactly what we are putting on or bodies....or our children's bodies....every single day. And with our outdated cosmetic laws, companies can legally put harmful or potentially harmful ingredients in their products and they don't have to tell you! Because of this, Beautycounter has the strictest Ingredient Selection Process that truly sets them apart. This is a FREE event. Click here for details and for registration information.
