The Power of Transparency

Kalpana (Rose) M. Kumar, M.D.

Every physician can look back over their years of medical training and remember an experience that sealed their desire to become a healer. The stories we carry in our hearts are timeless reminders and a constant source of inspiration and love for our work.

I did my medical training in New York and San Francisco in the early 1980's. A new virus was emerging in frightening numbers and increasing numbers of patients with opportunistic infections were occupying hospital beds. The cause of these infections was not yet clear. The U.S. government refused to fund research to study this new plague that was claiming thousands of lives.

Myfirst glance at AIDS was on the medical ward at Montefiore Hospital in New York. I remember dressing in what looked like a space suit to examine my infected patients. The unknown contagion that was damaging their immune systems was poorly understood. We needed to take all precautions to protect ourselves from becoming the next host.

"The Body Keeps the Score"

Editorial comments by:

Boris Matthews, PhD, Jungian Analyst

Brain, mind and body are intimately interconnected: together they register what we experience, determine the extent to which we have voluntary memory access to experiences, and condition our response or reaction to what we experience here and now. "Experience" is obviously the important term.

In his new book, The Body Keeps the Score (Viking, 2014), Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., "eloquently articulates how overwhelming experiences affect the development of brain, mind, and body awareness, all of which are closely intertwined." (Ruth A. Lanius, MD, PhD, from the professional endorsements in the book).

Spotlight on Reiki

Shelley Carpenter, PT, RYT, Reiki Master

What if we remembered that at our core, we are made of light?  This seeing beyond the visible to the hidden reality that we are spiritual beings having a unique human experience is sometimes called "Christ-consciousness." The more we get in touch with the spiritual aspect of ourselves, we are able to remember that others also contain this light. When we are in that fully conscious state, we are able to feel the connection between all beings and all of creation.
