Reframing the Aging Process

Kalpana (Rose) Kumar, M.D.

The saying goes, "the only two certainties in life are death and taxes." I would like to include aging with this. From the moment we are born, aging is guaranteed. When we are young, we feel immortal; we don't think about getting old, in fact we look forward to it. But around midlife, the thought of aging becomes front and center. Many fear and resist the aging process. They even lie about their age, claiming to be younger than they are. Our society views aging as a disease, a degenerative process. Our medical system pathologizes it. I see many women and men who come to me after their symptoms have been written off by other doctors as 'age related.'

Growing Older, What Should You Know?

Genevie L. Kocourek, M.D.

Over 13% of the population of the United States are 65 years of age or older. Caring for ourselves as we grow older is challenging. Often times, care of the older adult involves children or relatives. They often assist in day-to-day activities such as house cleaning and shopping, driving their loved-ones to appointments, offering financial support, and providing companionship.

Health concerns can change as we age, too. For instance, it is uncommon for a young person to have osteoporosis, but it is a common diagnosis in women over age 70. Eye diseases, often painless, can rob senior citizens of their vision. Falls and injuries can result in significant injury, including fractures and bleeding in the brain (hemorrhages). Therefore, it is wise to be aware of the most common conditions affecting senior citizens, and the steps that can be taken to protect us and our loved-ones.

Today's Retirees

Stephanie Delmore, MA, LPC

In years past, it was quite common for people to finish high school or college, find a job and work at the same company until they retire. The world of work is very different today. Companies are bought and sold, mergers grow companies and sell-offs slash divisions. Downsizing is a common experience for many skilled and professional workers and many employees feel that they are often "looking over their back" waiting for the next series of cuts to happen. Employees need to be ready to tune up their skills to potentially transition into a different kind of work or work environment. One benefit to this culture change is the emphasis on lifelong learning.

Dophin Assisted Craniosacral Therapy

Laura Levenhagen, RN, WCMT, Reiki Master Teacher

Dolphin Assisted Therapy is an incredible healing option for Craniosacral Therapists and their clients!  I just returned from the Upledger class:  BioAquatic Exploration -SomatoEmotional Release, and received my first up-close experience with dolphins.  Their energy felt incredibly strong and focused on the healing intentions we held.  Their clicks, buzzes and sonar frequencies sent powerful waves of vibration that opened areas of restriction in our bodies and minds.   I also perceived that they are ancient teachers ready to share their knowledge with us!

Yoga

Shelley Carpenter, PT, RYT, Reiki Master

It's hard to believe it's already September! This is a wonderful time to get back into a regular yoga practice. Summer in Wisconsin is usually packed with all of the fun and gatherings we can fit in. As enjoyable as it is, this can often leave us feeling scattered and off-center. As fall rolls around, it's a great time to ground ourselves, create a healing and calming routine in our lives, and build resilience that allows us to effectively deal with life's challenges.

It gives me great joy to share this beautiful practice with all who wish to experience the healing benefits of yoga in their lives.

I continue to offer ongoing Monday night classes at 6 PM and Tuesday morning classes at 9 AM at the Ommani Center.  You are welcome to drop-in any time or join us for the entire month. Cost is $13 for drop in, $44/4 weeks if you sign up for the calendar month.

I would love to see you next week!

Namaste,

Shelley
