Greetings!

Wishing you a beautiful summer! (Photo of Long's Peak
from Rocky Mountain National Park.)

Welcome to James, (2 weeks old in this picture), born to a patient of mine last month. Mom and baby are doing beautifully! This mom had a very difficult pregnancy, with a condition called polyhydramniosis, where the uterus was holding onto too much fluid. This was causing danger to the pregnancy and to the mother's health, and numerous trips to the hospital. We were able to find an acupuncture and herbal protocol to manage this condition, and reduce the fluid buildup. If you know anyone with this condition, I know that this mom would be glad to share her story. Acupuncture helps so much during pregnancy - helping to prevent miscarriages for women who have had one or more, help stabilize blood sugar and avoid gestational diabetes, and avoid complications such as pre-eclampsia which happens rarely but can be avoided with proper care for those who are susceptible. This is why I wanted to include an article on how acupuncture can help problems during pregnancy. It is written by my friend Naomi Rabinowitz, a medical acupuncturist.
I am also including an article on estrogen dominance during perimenopause by my all time favorite Christiane Northrup, MD. This is a condition that I treat regularly in my office. More women of all ages are experiencing estrogen dominance, partly caused by chemicals in our environment which mimic estrogen. This can lead to infertility as well as menstrual problems, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis..
Please give me your thoughts and feedback. I enjoy staying in touch!
Best to you, Molly

The conventional view of what happens at perimenopause is that estrogen levels plummet. This is a gross oversimplification and too often leads to treatment that can make mildly uncomfortable symptoms worse. In natural menopause, the first hormonal change that occurs is a gradual decline in levels of progesterone, while estrogen levels remain within the normal range or even increase. Because progesterone and estrogen are meant to counterbalance each other throughout the menstrual cycle, with one falling while the other rises and vice versa, an overall decline in progesterone allows estrogen levels to go unopposed-that is, without the usual counterbalance. The result is a relative excess of estrogen, a condition that is often called estrogen dominance-which is precisely the opposite of the conventional view.
Symptoms of Decreased Progesterone And Estrogen Dominance
* Decreased sex drive
* Irregular or otherwise abnormal periods (most often, excessive vaginal bleeding)
* Bloating (water retention)
* Breast swelling and tenderness
* Mood swings (most often irritability and depression)
* Weight gain (particularly around the abdomen and hips)
* Cold hands and feet
* Headaches, especially premenstrually
