EVERGREEN EAGLE EXPRESS
Week of September 11, 2016 - Issue 5

EVERGREEN MIDDLE SCHOOL  ǀ  6900 208TH Ave. NE, Redmond, WA 98053  ǀ  425-936-2320

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGEA
Hello Evergreen Families -

We had another excellent kick off to the school year and welcomed more Eagles than ever!  We are excited about this opportunity as our staff has increased and we welcomed new members; and our student body has increased and we welcomed new Eagles.  As with anything, there are initial growing pains and challenges but we are quickly sorting through those and students and staff are assimilating well into the new school year.  As I've shared in previous editions of the Eagle Express, both this year and last year, we make a concerted effort to meet students where they're at and support them in their learning journey.  During our Curriculum Night presentation on Tuesday, September 20, you will hear more about our specific steps to help students learn and grow in all facets of their education: behaviorally, academically, socially, and emotionally.  We've already begun conversations with students about Growth Mindset and the importance of perseverance when they don't know something.  If your student says, "I can't," that's our collective responsibility and opportunity to help them learn, understand, and grow.  We usually finish their sentence with ...yet and we hope that you'll help instill within your student a Growth Mindset as well.

Listed below are a few logistics and reminders about upcoming events and activities.  As always, please feel free to reach out and ask questions as we partner with you in your student's education.

Agenda Review: please review the student handbook and return the parent/student signature page by the end of the week

Laptop Roll Out: every student will receive their laptop on Tuesday, September 13; please review the expectations and sign and return all paperwork by the end of the week

Parking Pick Up and Drop Off: please only use EMS for student pick up and drop off and please pull all the way forward so we can get the maximum number of cars into the three drop off loops and off the street

Athletics: fall sports start on Monday, September 12; your student will need to give their coach a clearance slip to be eligible; all paperwork must be complete before athletes are issued a clearance slip

Curriculum Night: Tuesday, September 20 at 6:30pm in the Gym; please arrive early and carpool where possible to ensure we can start with the Parent Presentation at 6:30pm before moving into classroom visits at 7:00pm

As I shared with staff during our professional development week, I am more excited about this year than any of my previous 17 years.  We are poised for even greater things with the systems, structures, and programs we have in place and we look forward to seeing those efforts produce great fruit this year.  We hope your year is off to a great start and we look forward to partnering with you in the days, weeks, and months ahead.

Thanks and take care and have a great week.

Go Eagles!

LAPTOP CHECK-OUT *updated*

Our Evergreen Laptop Roll-Out Day is on Tuesday, September 13th.

Each student received the Laptop Agreement Form the first or second day of school, which should have been turned in to their science teacher by Friday, September 9th.  If it was not turned in, please do so ASAP.  A pdf copy is attached (click on "Laptop Agreement Form" above) to print out in case you need it.

There is also a newly updated version of the Laptop Handbook. The handbook should provide you with plenty of information and answer any questions you may have about the program.
ASB/ID CARDS & SCHOOL PICTURES *updated*

ASB/ID cards will be handed out this week for those who had a picture taken on Picture Day (Friday, Sept. 9th).  Due to time constraints this year, everyone who paid for ASB membership before Sept. 9th will have an ASB sticker on their card, instead of a printed ASB seal.  Please see Ms. Nilsen during cashier hours if you paid for ASB membership on or after Sept. 9th and need your ASB sticker.

For those who missed Picture Day, or would like to take another picture, retakes will be done on Friday, October 28th at the beginning of the school day.

If you pre-ordered school photos, your packet will arrive in 2-3 weeks.  If you did not pre-order, proof sheets will also arrive at that time and you can choose to order then.

FITNESS SHIRTS ARE HERE
*new*
Fitness shirts are now available to purchase for those students who are enrolled in a P.E. class this semester.  (Shirts bought from previous years that still fit may also be used.)
