EVERGREEN EAGLE EXPRESS
Week of August 28, 2016 - Issue 3

EVERGREEN MIDDLE SCHOOL  ǀ  6900 208TH Ave. NE, Redmond, WA 98053  ǀ  425-936-2320

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGEA
Hello Evergreen Families -

It was great to see so many smiling faces last Thursday during our Student Orientation.  I get more and more excited each day I see students in the building because that means school is just around the corner. We were excited to share with you all of the information you and your student can anticipate on the first day of school as well as some things to anticipate throughout the year.  We were also excited to showcase our new sound system and appreciate all of our parent support in helping us fundraise and purchase the sound system.  If you did not attend last Thursday's presentation, you can find it on our school website under the Announcements tab and also under the For Parents tab.

This is a big week for our staff as we welcome everyone back on Monday morning to share the vision, direction, and work for the year.  We will showcase more of the vision and work to parents during our Curriculum Night presentation on Tuesday, September 20 but we wanted to share with you some of the quick highlights and themes for the year.  Our school and district's vision and mission is to be future ready and it is our job to prepare them for the next step in their academic journey.  We look at the whole child and how we can support them behaviorally, academically, socially, and emotionally.  We collaborate on Professional Learning Community teams and answer four critical questions: 1. What do we want students to know and be able to do? 2. How will we know when they've learned it? 3. What will we do if they don't learn it? And 4. What will we do if they already know it?  We know that every student learns in their own unique way which is why we differentiate the learning to meet their individual needs.  We also know that school takes a lot of hard work, grit, determination, and perseverance.  We talk with students about grit and growth mindset and the importance of persevering through difficult challenges.  We like to use the work yet with students and let them know they're not supposed to know everything already.  If/when they say, "I don't know this/I can't do this" we just add on the word yet and share with them that it's our job as educators, parents, and community to support them in their learning.  We will help them learning everything they need to know to be future ready and prepare them for the next step in their academic journey.

We are excited to embark on another year of learning with your students, and our staff is eagerly anticipating the first day of school.

As always, please reach out to administrators, counselors, teachers, and staff to let us know how we can best support your student in their learning this year.

Thanks and take care and we will see you on Tuesday, September 6.

Sincerely,

Robert Johnson

Principal
Evergreen Middle School

SCHOOL NEWSC
SCHOOL PICTURE DAY *new*

Lifetouch Photography will be at EMS for School Picture Day on Friday, Sept. 9th.  You may pre-order your photos by going to www.mylifetouch.com and putting in our Picture Day ID #: LS116706Q0

Even if you choose not to buy photos, your student's picture will still be taken for the yearbook and ASB/ID card.

Your pre-ordered photos will arrive 2-3 weeks after Picture Day.  If you do not pre-order, proof sheets will also arrive at that time and you can choose to order then.
STUDENT ASB/ID CARDS *new*

Student ASB/ID cards will be given out during the second week of school for those who take a picture on Picture Day.  Temporary paper ID cards will be given out before that.

*Please note: If you pay for your ASB membership before Picture Day, the ASB seal will be printed on your student's ID card rather than put on with a sticker later.  ASB membership is required to participate in school sports or clubs and can be paid for online through Parent Access.

VOLUNTEER BADGES *new*

For parents and others who plan to volunteer at EMS, free volunteer badges will be made if you come to the EMS Library between 7:45am and 2pm on Picture Day (Friday, Sept. 9th) and have your picture taken.  Your badges will be available that same day.  With a volunteer badge, you must still sign in at the office every time you come to the school to help out.  The volunteer badge simply replaces the visitor sticker you wear.

The buses will run at the regular time to pick up 6th graders on the first day of school and 2 1/2 hours later for 7th and 8th graders who will start at 10:30am on that day only.  Everyone will come home at the regular time.
