PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Hello Evergreen Families -

We hope you had a wonderful Winter Break with your family and are feeling well rested and relaxed.  We started 2016 off with a Love & Kindness Assembly with beloved EMS speaker Houston Kraft.  Prior to introducing Houston, I showed students a white piece of paper representing a blank slate: this year was a new opportunity.  On the backside, I had written the date and told students they would receive 365 pieces of paper just like this one and asked them what would they do with their year?  What kind of book would they write?

I've introduced a lot of speakers over the years including The Iceman, John Jacobs and The Power Team, Mark Sharenbroich, Stu Cabe, and a host of others. And as I told students, Houston Kraft is my favorite: his message of Love and Kindness transcends all barriers, boundaries, obstacles, and challenges.  We can love and be kind to all those around us, and at Evergreen, we love his enthusiasm and well-groomed eye brows.

When Houston came on, he had students both laughing and pensive as he shared numerous stories from his own school years about times when he treated others kindly and times when he shattered others' dreams.  He realized the impact of his actions and vowed to make a conscientious choice to spread love and kindness going forward.  He shared funny stories about the impact one person's actions can have on another and a time when only one person was dancing in the cafeteria, then two, then more, and then the whole lunchroom.  He said in the same way one person's actions can have a positive ripple in a cafeteria, so too, can those actions extend to love and kindness in a school's culture.  He shared that it takes a cultural shift to make kindness normal; that it's not traditionally our default setting.  He empowered students to make kindness the new normal and students were excited, impassioned, and empowered when they left the assembly.

Regardless of age, race, socio-economic status or position, Love and Kindness are universal and we can all display those characteristics to each other at Evergreen.  So as an Evergreen Community in 2016, we will continue to promote Love & Kindness and push to make Kindness our default setting.  We have activities planned through Homeroom with our Leadership students and we look forward to the impact Love and Kindness will have on our school.

We wish you a fantastic 2016 as we continue on this journey together.  We will work with your student to write a fantastic book in 2016 and make each piece of paper/day the best it can be.

As always, please let us know how we can best support your student: academically, socially, emotionally, and behaviorally.

Wishing you all our best,

Robert Johnson

SCHOOL NEWS
WINTER WONDERLAND DANCE *new*
Our 2nd dance of the year will be held on Friday, January 22nd.  The dance will be our usual "sock hop" in the gym from 2:30-4:30pm.  The theme this time is Winter Wonderland.  Students are encouraged to dress in all white, silver and light blue, and wear winter type accessories like winter hats, scarves, ear muffs, mittens etc.

Dance tickets are $5.00 and will be on sale beginning Friday morning, January 15th and ending on Thursday, January 21st at lunch.  THERE WILL BE NO TICKET SALES ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 22ND (the day of the dance).  We need tickets purchased before Friday, so we can hand out wristbands during lunches on the day of the dance.  Students may purchase tickets at the cashier window from Ms. Nilsen before school from 7AM - 7:55AM or during their assigned lunch. The cashier window is not open after school.  The line for dance ticket sales during lunches on Wednesday (1/20) and Thursday (1/21) will be quite long.  Students can save themselves a lot of time by purchasing their tickets before school, or earlier in the week on Friday (1/15) or Tuesday (1/19).

EMS PLAY *new*
LIGHTS ~ CAMERA ~ ACTION
Calling all 6-8 graders!
Your student won't want to miss this fun opportunity to be in the EMS play!
Once Upon a Mattress...

"The Princess and The Pea," you say...you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know that in fact, it wasn't the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans.

More information will be available soon.
Auditions begin Monday, February 1. Show dates are March 18-19.

RHS FRESHMAN PARENT NIGHT
Redmond High School will host their Future Freshman Parent Night for parents of the class of 2020 on Wednesday, January 20th from 6:30-8pm in RHS' Performing Arts Center.  If you have a current 8th grader who will be attending Redmond High School next school year, this is a great opportunity to learn what RHS is all about!

EHS FRESHMAN PARENT NIGHT
The Eastlake High School Counseling Department will be hosting their Incoming Freshman Parent Night for the Class of 2020 parents on Wednesday, January 27th @ 7:00 p.m. in the theater.  This is an opportunity for parents of current 8th grade students who plan to attend EHS in the fall of 2016-2017 to learn more about our course registration process, graduation requirements, and activity and athletic opportunities available to our students. If you are unable to attend this presentation and would like more information it will be available on the Counseling Haiku page as well as the Eastlake webpage following the presentation. We hope to see you there!

LWSD SURVEY EXTENDED
The district has important plans under development on a critically important topic that will shape the future of Lake Washington School District. We are seeking your input on a draft funding plan designed to meet the district's need for more classroom space and need to address aging facilities.

A survey is open now and will continue to be open through January 15. Your feedback will help us develop the best possible plan to present to the School Board prior to a measure being place on the ballot for a community vote.

Please click this link to take the survey: LWSD funding plan survey. Thank you in advance for participating.

LOST & FOUND
Please remind your student to check out the lost and found corner in the Commons.  There are several clothing items as well as lunch boxes and water bottles.  Any unclaimed items will be donated to the Hope Festival on January 20th.
