PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Hello Evergreen Families -

We hope you had a wonderful and restful Winter Break and are rejuvenated for 2016.  With the new year comes many new opportunities: we have a fresh start at goal setting, accomplishing our dreams, or taking a first or next step toward something on our life journey.  Each January I set new personal and professional goals and each December I reflect on how far I came.  I can't say that I always accomplish all of my goals to the full degree I had initially set, but each January gives me an opportunity to start afresh and each December gives me an opportunity to reflect and revise.  It is in this continuous learning and growing cycle that I am able to make progress and end up one step closer to my goals.  We hope you will take time this January with your student to talk about the importance of goal setting and create goals with them for their personal and/or academic success.  If you're looking for resources, this month's Counseling Corner also has great strategies for goal setting you can use with your student.

In addition to a focus on goal setting, we're also hosting Love & Kindness Advocate Houston Kraft on Tuesday, January 5.  Houston has been a frequent visitor to EMS over the last few years but his message of love and kindness never grows old.  We will always promote those values at Evergreen and strive to make 2016 an even better year filled with more hope, more love, more kindness, and an even better learning environment for our students.

We also wanted to Welcome Back Associate Principal Anne Balicki who has been out on maternity leave for the last three months.  Anne has continued to meet with our admin team and stayed apprised of everything going on at EMS during her leave and we are excited to welcome her back!  We know she will hit the ground running and it will feel as if she was never gone.  We also wanted to wish a final farewell to Associate Principal Rebekah Westra who capably served in Anne's absence.  Our team never missed a beat and we are grateful to Rebekah for so competently filling those large shoes.

We look forward to all that 2016 holds for our school and community and we look forward to celebrating with your student as they accomplish their personal and academic goals.

Wishing you all our best for a blessed and prosperous 2016,

Robert Johnson

COUNSELING CORNER: JANUARY 2016
Happy New Year from your counseling team at Evergreen Middle School!  With the beginning of the New Year, it is a great time to think about starting fresh with new goals and New Year's Resolutions.  In this month's counseling corner, we hope to give you some ideas to discuss setting goals with your students.  As the end of the first semester approaches, it is a great time to think about ways to help our students improve their academic habits.

As many of us already know, setting goals can be simple, but achieving them is often more difficult.  To combat this challenge, we use the idea of SMART goals to help improve the understanding and the effectiveness of a goal setting.  By using the SMART goal setting model we can make sure that all goals are:

S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Attainable
R = Realistic
T = Timely

For example, rather than a student having a goal of 'getting better grades at the semester' they could use the SMART model to create a more specific goal such as:

"I will raise my math grade from a C to a B by completing two missing assignments by Friday, January 8th and complete one test retake by Wednesday, January 13th."

By ensuring that goals are specific and measurable, it helps students remain accountable.  When students make their goals attainable and realistic it helps them build their self-confidence when they accomplish these resolutions.  To continue to help your student with this process some great questions to ask include:
  • What would you like to see different about this year?
  • What are you doing well?
  • What is something specific that you want to see change?
  • Who can help you make this change?
  • How will you know that you have accomplished your goal?
If you have any questions please contact your child's teachers and/or counselor at any time!  Remember, the Counseling Corner is only once a month but you can check the Counseling Haiku page for resources at any time!

Thank you!
