PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
|
Hello Evergreen Families -
We wanted to extend a pre-Thanksgiving note of appreciation to say how grateful we are for our EMS community. Over the past two weeks, our National Junior Honor Society hosted their annual Food Drive and they collected more food this year than any previous year. Thank you for your generosity during this Thanksgiving season. HopeLink was in awe when they saw the mountains of food and it took two full trucks to transport all of the food from EMS to their facilities. We are so grateful to you for your generosity and speaking on behalf of the families who receive it as well, thank you.
We hope you, too, have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday with family and friends.
A few quick EMS announcements:
Report Cards
Report Cards went home with students on Friday; these grades were as of the 1st Quarter (November 4) and give an indication of how your student has progressed through the mid-point of the first semester. You can also access your student's most current grades online through Skyward as teachers have continued to add and update student's progress. If there is a question about your student's grades, we always encourage students to talk with their teachers first, then have parents ask if the student is unable to articulate the response.
Homework and Haiku
Teachers continue to update Haiku weekly and in some cases daily with assignments and homework. If your student misses school, please check Haiku to keep up on the missing work.
Wednesday LEAP We spent this past Wednesday learning about accommodations and modifications we can apply in our classes to best support student learning. Thank you to our Special Education Department Chairs Arahka Swinburne and Laura McIntyre for presenting this learning to our staff. We learned great strategies as well as practical and applicable tools we can use in classrooms to best support all learners. Thank you also to our community for supporting this professional development and the early release on Wednesdays.
Weather
We survived Wind Storm 2015 relatively unscathed and did not lose power. We know some schools in the LWSD did not have power and thus missed out on learning opportunities last Wednesday. The upcoming forecast shows a potential for snowflakes this next week so please be sure to monitor social media and the news outlets for any potential closures or delays. You can also check the LWSD website at www.lwsd.org
The upcoming week is very short: two full days and an early release at 11:00am on Wednesday for the Thanksgiving Break. We hope you have a restful and relaxing time with family and friends and please know how thankful we are to partner with you in your child's education.
Wishing you all our best,
Robert Johnson

YEARBOOK
Evergreen Eagles: We will have our last Yearbook sell date starting November 1st, 2015, running through December 18th, 2015. The cost for Yearbooks are $30.00. They can be purchased at the cashier window with cash or check made out to "EMS." (The online option is currently not up and running. EMS Staff is working to fix the problem.) Don't miss out on the opportunity to purchase this great keepsake!
OFFICE STAFF REQUESTS FOR PARENTS
The school year is off to a great start and as we close out the first quarter we have some requests for parents to help our students grow in their
independence and reduce the amount of deliveries being made each day.
We are happy to deliver items left at home to your student; however, we ask that you limit your drop-offs to only those items necessary for the school day (lunch or laptops). Consequences from forgetting homework are a natural consequence and learning opportunity for our students and may decrease the number of times it happens in the future.
We want your students to ask us for help! Rather than
you calling to find out if your student has everything they need for sports, lunch accounts or clubs, have your students ask the questions about what is needed for sports, clubs, etc.. We understand they don't always come home with all of the information, but this is a skill we would like them to work on through middle school so they have practice before high school.
PRE-ARRANGED ABSENCES AND ATTENDANCE POLICIES
If you know in advance your student will be missing school, please call our Attendance Office at 425-936-2321 to pre-arrange the absence. Then we can enter the event into Skyward as an excused absence and you will not receive a phone call indicating your student was absent.
Also, please note we can only excuse absences for the following reasons:
· illness
· medical appointments
· family emergencies
· religious holidays
· school-related field trips
· suspensions and absences created by the school
· other planned absences
All other absences will be considered unexcused, and students who accumulate too many unexcused absences will be subject to the Becca Bill and the King County Juvenile Court System.
Please see the Attendance Policies on p. 20-21 in the EMS Student Handbook for further explanation.

PTSA MEMBERSHIP
Back in the "olden days" membership fees pretty much covered the yearly PTSA budget, The more members you had the more money you made. These days PTSA's have much bigger budgets and membership fees alone will not cover all that we do. However, membership fees and having a large number of PTSA members are still important. It gives us a more of a say on legislative issues that affect children, families, and schools, as well as alerts that give you an opportunity to weigh in on a key federal policy issues with your members of Congress. Thank you to those 600 plus EMS parents that have become EMS PTSA members and remember it is not to late to become a member. Just follow the link,
complete your form, and turn it into the EMS office with your check.
