PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Hello Evergreen Families -

We hope you enjoyed the extra hour of sleep this past weekend and today's edition of the Eagle Express finds you well rested, refreshed, and ready to tackle November.  Based on last week's events with Spirit Week and our assembly on Friday, we definitely needed the extra hour of sleep.  Friday was a fantastic culmination to an outstanding week of school spirit and students amazed us with their outfits, costumes and enthusiasm.  My personal favorite was Cozy/Comfy Day so I infused that theme throughout the week by wearing pajamas nearly every day including football fleece pajamas and a Superman onesie for my Halloween costume.  Our whole staff was just as spirited and it was fun for students to see us in a different light as well as it gave us an opportunity to high-5 students throughout the week.  We also had an amazing Spirit Assembly on Friday and announced our Fun Run total.  We are so grateful to you for all your generosity and support for EMS.  Because of your contributions and generosity, we were able to raise more than $32,000; this does not yet include matching funds from companies like Microsoft so we look forward to getting those matching dollars as well and seeing what our true total is.  Not only is $32,000 an increase of our total fundraising amount, but we get to keep 100% of the profits rather than giving away nearly half to a company for running the event.  We are ecstatic that this money remains at Evergreen to support students in clubs, activities, athletics and other ASB endeavors.  Thank you again for your contributions.

We are hosting a different assembly on Monday with guest speaker Stefanie Thomas coming to Evergreen.  Ms. Thomas is a Detective with the Seattle Police Department and will be talking with students about Cyber Safety and their online profile.  She will share ways students can be safer online and remind them that what they post on the internet stays forever so to "pause before you post."  We encourage you to discuss these talking points with your student after Monday's assembly and to review their online presence including their Facebook, Instagram, Snap Chat, Vine and/or other online profiles.  What students are willing to share with total strangers is very eye opening and we encourage you to talk with your student about what they post online.

Lastly, the 1st Quarter ends on Wednesday, November 4 and teachers are busily preparing and scoring student assessments.  The quarter grades give a good indication of student progress as we have now completed nine weeks of the school year.  We encourage you to log on to Skyward and review your student's grades with them.  If students need extra help, they are always welcome to come before and after school as well as during Homeroom time if there are questions or concerns about how to complete their school work.  Students also fill out their agendas daily and teachers post assignments and upcoming due dates on Haiku, so we encourage you to review those resources as well to help keep track of upcoming tests and projects.

We have a fantastic teaching staff dedicated to student success.  We were able to participate in the lighter side of school this past week with dress up days and a spirit assembly; and one of the things I appreciate most about this staff and school is there was no letdown in terms of rigor, work load, or academic expectations this past week just because our clothes changed.  Our staff, first and foremost, is committed to helping students achieve at high levels and supporting them reaching their academic goals.  We thank you for your partnership in these endeavors.

As always, please reach out if you have questions about any of the themes in this week's Eagle Express or in how to best support your student and their learning at EMS.  We appreciate your continued support and are grateful to partner with you.

Sincerely,

Robert Johnson

Principal

OUR FIRST EVER ASB EAGLE FUN RUN WAS A HUGE SUCCESS! *new*
On Friday, October 30th, we held our Fall Spirit Assembly. Part of the assembly was dedicated to celebrating our Fun Run accomplishments!  We were so excited to share the following results with our students.

Thanks to all the students, parents, and community members who participated and made donations, we surpassed our goal of raising $25,000 with a grand total of $33,188!! (*All totals are before matching)

The 6th grade class had 71% of their students participating, and they brought in a total of $9,358.
The 7th grade class had 73% of their students participate, for a total of $6,487.
And the 8th grade class had 74% of the students participate, bringing in a total of $7,343.
We also had one family make a very large donation AND submit it for matching through Microsoft, which helped is reach our $33,188 total!  Thank you!!!

Four Homeroom classes reached the goal of 100% participation, with all students returning their envelopes. The four Homeroom classes who will be receiving a 100% Participation Homeroom Party are:
Ms. Buffa's class
Ms. McIntyre's class
Ms. McNaughton's class and
Ms. Stroud's class

The Homeroom classes with the highest total donations were:
    1. Ms. Kasper's class
    2. Ms. Jackson's class
    3. Ms. Pomerinke's class
    4. Mr. Beise's class

Ms. Kesler's Awareness theme

Most Visually Appealing:
Ms. Kasper's Unicorns and Ms. King's Blue Squad

Judges' Award:

In addition, there were 70 students who have earned a trip to the donut truck later this month, by raising $100 in donations (before matching).  Those students will be notified in the coming weeks.

Overall, the event was a huge success!  The students did an amazing job of collecting donations, but more than that, the Fun Run ended up being an amazing bonding experience for our entire student body and staff.  The level of participation in the Homeroom theme dress-up and the Fun Run itself, was truly exciting.  Many students and staff commented on how much fun it was to see the whole school focused and working together for a common goal; and we all had a blast in the process.  This is will absolutely become an annual event for EMS, and we look forward to making it even better next year!  Thanks again to all who donated, encouraged, and supported our students in this endeavor.

PICTURES NEEDED FOR VETERAN'S DAY ASSEMBLY! *updated*
We are looking for photos of family members and friends who are currently serving or have served in the armed forces but have only received a handful of pictures for Veterans Day so far.  We would really like to put them in a slide show for the assembly, but cannot do so if there are not enough.

The deadline for submitting Veterans Day pictures is Friday, November 6th
Pictures should be sent to Evergreen ASB via email at emsasb@lwsd.org.
It would be helpful if the picture file was labeled as the person's name in the digital photo.
Within the email, please include:
  • The Veteran's full name
  • What branch of the armed forces and the years of service
  • The name of the EMS student who the person in the photo is related to (or friends with)
Thanks!
