PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Hello Evergreen Families!

School has started well and we are excited for the year of learning ahead.  Students are quickly learning routines, procedures, expectations, and getting back in to the groove of school.  The first two weeks were only four-day weeks and now we will have our first Monday of the year.  Over the years when walking around and talking with students at lunch, I often ask them what is their favorite day of the week.  In many cases, they say Friday, Saturday, or Sunday; I enjoy those days as well but I quickly remind students that Monday is not just 1/7th of their week but 1/7th of their life.  What if we didn't have Mondays?  We would miss out on 14% of life and only have 86% of our days.  Would we feel satisfied living life at 86% or do we want to live life at 100%?  Mondays represent 14% of our days, so here's to making the most of this first Monday and its impact on our week and life!

There are many exciting and important events upcoming this week as well.

Laptops
Students will be receiving their laptop through Science class on Monday.  Last week your student received a green laptop agreement form that needs to be returned to their Science teacher prior to receiving their laptop.  If your student hasn't yet brought back their form, please remind them to do so on Monday.  Your student will also be receiving a yellow inspection/agreement form.  Please be sure to look over their laptop for damage and bring back the form on Tuesday.  Our Librarian, Kevin Olson, has also created a document with important dates for parents as well as a quick resource guide to review that highlights key pages in the handbook.

Curriculum Night
Curriculum Night is Tuesday, September 15 at 6:30pm in the Fieldhouse.  Parking will be extremely tight so please plan to arrive early.  For this evening event, it is acceptable to park at Dickinson Elementary School.

After a welcoming introduction and overview in the Fieldhouse, you will follow your student's schedule including bells and passing periods to their six classes.  Teachers will be providing a brief overview of the class' standards, curriculum, assessments, and general procedures.  If you have questions about your student's progress in class, please make an appointment with the teacher for another time, as there will be another set of parents immediately following your student's class.

Lunchroom Expectations
As we've shared in previous Eagle Expresses, we have quite a few students this year at Evergreen.  Because of the increased numbers and limited space, we are reminding students to place all of their classroom materials in their locker prior to coming to lunch.  This will be especially true starting on Monday when laptops are distributed as we do not want computers bumped off tables or food spilled on them.  We have worked hard to ensure every student has a locker and is able to open it successfully.  If your student is still struggling with their locker, please have them see Mrs. Nilsen or Mrs. Rudolph in the Main Office.

Traffic
Parking and traffic seem to be smoothing themselves out quickly.  Part of this can be attributed to many students participating in our after-school Athletics programs; we currently have more than 100 boys turning out for Tennis; 90+ girls for Badminton; and more than 70 student athletes for Cross Country.  Busses are not as crowded after school and students have found their routes quickly and easily, thus helping drivers get them loaded and on their way in a safe manner.

We are also extremely grateful to all the parents who follow the parking lot expectations.  Thank you for pulling as far forward as possible in the parking lot, thus allowing busses to get in the bus chute and more cars off the street.

Final Thoughts
Evergreen is a fantastic school and we are fortunate to partner with you.  It was very warming and heartening to meet with PTSA parents last Thursday and share in our successes as well as hear their confirmation that we're supporting the whole child in learning.  We look forward to a fantastic year ahead and we hope that you make the most of this Monday and every day this year.

Thanks and take care and Go Eagles!

With that said... we greatly appreciate any extra patience and understanding that you can give us through this process.

    Resources:
There are laptop support resources available to both students and parents online. Those resources can be found on the district website. We have included some hyperlinks to help you better access them.

The district "For Students" tab includes a "Caring for your Laptop" Page.

STAFF APPRECIATION NEED *new*
We are still in need of some food and paper goods for our first Staff Appreciation Meal of the year on 9/15.  The teachers will have a VERY long day this Tuesday please help us make sure they are well fed before Curriculum Night begins.  Please sign up if your are able to help:

VOLUNTEER BADGES *updated*
Volunteer badges for parents who had their pictures taken at Back to Business Days will be available to pick up Tuesday night before Curriculum Night begins.  There will be a table set up from 6:00-6:15pm. If you are unable to pick up your badge then, you can get it in the school office during the week.  If you did not have your picture taken, you will have the opportunity to do so on picture retake day.  Badges are completely optional (they can be worn instead of the temporary yellow name tags). Even if you have a badge you still MUST sign in when you come to school.  If you do plan on volunteering at school this year, please make sure that you have an approved background check prior to working with the kids - badges do not mean you are approved.  All volunteers working with kids in any capacity are background checked before each event that you sign up for.

LONG-TERM FACILITIES TASK FORCE SURVEY, OPEN HOUSE, MEETINGS *updated*
Over the last few years, Lake Washington School District's enrollment has been growing by the equivalent of an elementary school each year. There is little space left in current school buildings, some of which need replacing due to their age and building conditions. That was the challenge facing the Long-Term Facilities Task Force as it began its work last December. They have now developed a set of recommendations that may affect your child's school in the future.

This work has the potential to affect families and schools in our district for years to come. Please take part in it.

You can review the recommendations and provide feedback beginning September 1 through an online open house. A survey on that site will be open September 1 through October 11.

* Attend an upcoming regional meeting (all four meetings will have the same content/format)
  • Juanita High School, Wednesday, September 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m
  • Rose Hill Middle School, Thursday, September 17, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
  • Redmond High School, Monday, September 28, 6:30-8:30 p.m
  • Eastlake High School, Wednesday, September 30, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

* Attend the district-wide Town Hall Meeting, Wednesday, October 7, at Rose Hill Middle School, from 6:00-8:30 p.m.

ASB "FUN RUN" *new*
Instead of the Magazine Drive this year, the ASB (Associated Student Body) will be doing a "Fun Run" on Friday, 10/9.
The ASB and Leadership teacher, Trish Miller, is looking for two key people to join her in this:  one is a "point person" who would help with organization, ideas, and logistics; the other is a "data person" who is great with Excel and would help with data collection and entry.  Please email her at trimiller@lwsd.org, if interested.  More volunteers will be needed to help with donations on 10/1, 10/6 and 10/8 and to supervise the "Fun Run" on 10/9.  Look to sign up for those in future newsletters!

SCHOOL PICTURES
All proofs (and any ordered packets) from school pictures that were taken during Back to Business Days should have gone home with your student on Friday, 9/4.  If you haven't already ordered, you can do so at Mylifetouch.com by entering the portrait ID and access code that was given on your proof sheet.

Proofs from school pictures taken on Thursday, 9/3 should be back in 2-3 weeks.  Retakes will be in October.

PTSA
PTSA PASS THE HAT FUNDRAISER *updated*
A huge "THANK YOU" to those who have already donated to our 2015-16 EMS PTSA Pass the Hat campaign! Our goal is to have Pass the Hat as our primary fundraiser each year.*

Money donated ensures that wonderful programs supporting Evergreen students and staff can be continued.  We have already met $12,000 of our $25,000 goal this year, not including money from affinity programs and matching donations!  We are fortunate that many companies will match your donation ... please check with yours to see if they have a matching program.

If you weren't able to give earlier, you will have another chance at our PTSA table during Curriculum Night on 9/15.  You may also send in a donation to the front office with your student.

*Please note: The PTSA is separate from ASB.  ASB fundraisers raise funds for extracurricular things decided by students.  PTSA is broader but tends to lend support mostly in the way of academics.
