PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Hello Evergreen Families!

Welcome to the official start of the school year and an exciting year of learning ahead!  In spite of the rain on Tuesday, it could not dampen staff and students' excitement for returning to school!  There was so much enthusiasm and energy; we started off the day with Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) activities and there were many bright eyes full of amazement and wonder as we welcomed 418 6th graders to the EMS Family.  We recognize that some students were nervous while others were excited; regardless of your student's comfort level in returning to school, we are excited to meet them where they're at and help them grow as learners and as young people.  We focus on the whole child at Evergreen and will help them grow academically, behaviorally, socially, and emotionally through various activities at school.  We are excited to partner with you in your child's education and help them grow this year.

With so many new students at Evergreen, you may have noticed changes in traffic as well.  The district contracted with the King County Sheriff to help with traffic flow the first few days.  This was designed to help the initial congestion; and as parents and families get more accustomed to their morning and afternoon routines, we're hopeful the traffic flow will sort itself out.  Please remember that parent drop off and pick up can only occur at EMS.  Please do not use Dickinson Elementary as their parking arrangements are not designed to support students coming down to Evergreen.  When using the EMS parking lot for drop off or pick up, please pull as far forward as possible before dropping off/picking up your student.  This ensures we get the maximum number of cars into the parking lot and off the street, thus creating a safer environment for all.

One way traffic may be minimized this week is when our athletic programs begin on Tuesday.  Many students who ride the bus or carpool home with parents will now be participating in after school sports.  It is not too late for your student to sign up.  Boys are eligible to participate in Cross Country and Tennis.  Girls are eligible to participate in Cross Country in addition to Badminton.  Students can bring a check for $75 to participate and practices and competitions are held on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays; there are no athletics on Wednesdays because of early release and professional development for staff.

This week will hold many important events for your student; we will be explaining our student agenda to students in their core content classes and explaining how to best utilize this organizational structure.  We are placing a greater emphasis on student organization this year and we think fully utilizing the agenda will help us accomplish this goal.  Feel free to review your student's agenda with them and ask them to explain its functions and features.  In addition, please ask your student about their green laptop user agreement form.  As a secondary student, each learner receives their own laptop to use in class and home for academic purposes only.  Your student will have their same laptop as last year and 6th graders will be issued a laptop for the first time.  We will be distributing laptops through Science classes on Monday, September 14.  Prior to receiving a laptop, your student must return their agreement forms.  Also prior to issuing laptops, we will be covering our Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) and also explaining the importance of good computer hygiene and care with students to ensure there are no damages and the laptop runs at its peak performance.

Other school and district announcements will come through the Peachjar eFlyer system; you may have already received the first edition in your inbox on Friday.  There is a hyperlink located on our school website and you can also access the flyers directly at this link if you are not currently receiving them and would like to do so.

We are excited to meet with you on Tuesday, September 15 at 6:30pm in the Fieldhouse (gym) for our Curriculum Night.  This will be an opportunity for us to share with you an overview of our school including curriculum, assessment, and instructional strategies as well as athletics, activities, and club offerings; this will also be an opportunity to learn how you can be involved supporting our school through PTSA.  Because we have over 1000 students, parking and seating will be very tight, so we encourage you to arrive early.

The school year is just beginning and we are excited to partner with you on this journey; please let us know how we can best support you and your learner.

All my best,

Robert Johnson

Principal

LONG-TERM FACILITIES TASK FORCE SURVEY, OPEN HOUSE COMING SOON
Over the last few years, Lake Washington School District's enrollment has been growing by the equivalent of an elementary school each year. There is little space left in current school buildings, some of which need replacing due to their age and building conditions. That was the challenge facing the Long-Term Facilities Task Force as it began its work last December. They have now developed a set of recommendations that may affect your child's school in the future.

You can review the recommendations and provide feedback beginning September 1 through an online open house. A survey on that site will be open September 1 through October 11. There will also be meetings in each of the district's learning communities in late September: information will be in the next issue of this newsletter. Save the date now for a Task Force Town Hall on Wednesday, October 7, at Rose Hill Middle School at 6 p.m.

NEW DISTRICT ELECTRONIC FLYER SYSTEM
On August 24, our district launched a new electronic flyer (or eflyer) system called "Peachjar."  This system will help families learn about events, classes and other programs in our community that may be of interest. It replaces the "Community Bulletin Board" that was on our school's website.

The Peachjar system distributes eflyers from nonprofit organizations as well as from our school and school-related organizations such as PTSAs or booster clubs.  Parents will receive direct mails with new eflyers.  All approved eflyers will also be posted on the Peachjar page on our school website.

You should have received a welcome email from Peachjar that includes a username and password. This email gives instructions on how to manage your account and flyer delivery preferences. You can determine how often you get these emails and can unsubscribe if you wish. If you do nothing, you will begin receiving one email each day that a flyer is approved.

To ensure smooth delivery of this communication, we suggest that you add lwsd@peachjar.com to your email contacts. When you receive your first eflyer, be sure to click "always display images."

The Peachjar system will only be used for distribution of district- and school-approved flyers. Your email address will not be shared or used for any other purpose.
