PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

  Hello Evergreen Families-

We are so excited to see you in just a few short days.  Attached is our staff picture taken earlier this week, and as you can see from all our smiling faces, we are excited for summer to be over and be back in classrooms with you and your students.  There will be more Eagles than ever this year at Evergreen.  As of our last student scheduling report on Friday, we will have 1054 students.  That might seem overwhelming at first glance, but please know that we pride ourselves on making Evergreen a warm, welcoming, conducive learning environment with an emphasis on personalizing the learning experience for each student.  Our job as educators is to know the learning needs of your student and meet them where they're at.  The LWSD Vision is "Every Student. Future Ready" and we are excited to prepare each one of our 1054 students for the next step in their educational career.

In preparation for additional students, we have hired fantastic staff members that you will get to meet on the first day of school as well as at Curriculum Night.  We have also converted learning spaces and added new portables so there are many changes at Evergreen, but through it all, our core mission remains the same: to get to know your student as an individual learner and help them meet their educational goals.

Logistics for the first week of school:

School Start Time on Tuesday
All 6th graders will come to Evergreen at 8:00am and meet their Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) Leader and play some fun getting to know you games.  In addition, they will learn about our school and how to be a successful middle school student.
All 7th and 8th graders will arrive at Evergreen 2 1/2 hours later for a 10:30am start time.  We will have shortened classes and everyone will release at 2:30pm.
What to Bring on Tuesday:
Students only need to bring their lunch or lunch money.  They do not need to bring a backpack or any class supplies.

Schedules
Students will receive their schedule on the first day of school in the Commons.  Counselors have been working tirelessly to balance classes and to ensure students are appropriately placed in all the right classes.  We appreciate your patience and understanding as there may still be a few changes as we continue to balance or if a student was misplaced.  All schedules should be set by the end of the first week.

Lockers
Students will be issued a locker on Wednesday.  Staff will be out in the hallways during passing periods to help students navigate the combination and organizing materials.

Student Agendas
Students will receive their agenda on Wednesday and we ask they write down their homework in the agenda each day.  We are placing a greater emphasis on organization this year and have developed lessons to support this effort.  There will be a healthy competition during 4th period Homerooms this year to see which classes are the most organized and using their agendas.

Sports Paperwork
Fall Sports begin on Tuesday, September 8.  All paperwork needs to be turned in to Kathleen Nilsen by Thursday, September 3 to be eligible for the first practice on Tuesday, September 8.  As a reminder, there are no sports on Wednesdays because of our early release.

Student Drop Off and Pick Up
Parking and student drop off and pick up will have additional challenges this year because of our increase in student enrollment.  We ask that you use both "Y's" of our front parking lot and pull as far forward as possible before dropping off your student.  We are trying to get as many cars off the street and into the parking lot to help with congestion and safety.  Please do not drop off your student on 208th and hope they can dart across traffic as this is not safe and there is no marked crosswalk on 208th.  Please also do not use Dickinson Elementary school for drop off or pick up.

We know there are mixed emotions for the first day of school: some students might be very apprehensive while others may exude enthusiasm.  As a staff, we are excited to meet your student and allay any fears they have while also sharing in their excitement and enthusiasm.  Knowing that we have students coming from many different schools including different elementary schools, private schools, other middle schools, or returning to Evergreen, we are excited to share our culture build on our traditions as Evergreen Eagles.  We are now all Eagles.  All 1054 of us.

This will be a fantastic year at Evergreen and we are excited to see your students on Tuesday; we look forward to partnering with you this year and preparing your student for the next step in their educational career.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if there are ways we can better support you and your student.

Warmly,

Robert Johnson

Principal
Evergreen Middle School

SCHOOL NEWS
BUS ROUTE SCHEDULES *new*
You should have received a bus route postcard in the mail that includes your child's bus route information.  If not, you can look it up here.  You can also go the LWSD website, click on the "For Parents" tab, then the "Transportation" link under that.  For the first day of school, there will be a second bus pick up (2 1/2 hours after your normal pick up) for all 7th and 8th graders.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - SCHEDULES *new*
The first day of school is upon us.  Please sign up to hand out schedules to our eager students from 9:45-10:45am on 9/1/15.  The more help we get the quicker our kids will be able to make it to their very first class of the school year.

LONG-TERM FACILITIES TASK FORCE SURVEY, OPEN HOUSE COMING SOON *new*
Over the last few years, Lake Washington School District's enrollment has been growing by the equivalent of an elementary school each year. There is little space left in current school buildings, some of which need replacing due to their age and building conditions. That was the challenge facing the Long-Term Facilities Task Force as it began its work last December. They have now developed a set of recommendations that may affect your child's school in the future.

You can review the recommendations and provide feedback beginning September 1 through an online open house. A survey on that site will be open September 1 through October 11. There will also be meetings in each of the district's learning communities in late September: information will be in the next issue of this newsletter. Save the date now for a Task Force Town Hall on Wednesday, October 7, at Rose Hill Middle School at 6 p.m.

PRE-ORDER YOUR SCHOOL PICTURES *updated*
For those who missed Back to Business Days and are taking school pictures on Thurs., 9/3, you can now pre-order those portraits.  Visit Mylifetouch.com  and insert our school's picture day ID for Picture Day on 9/3LS115706Q1.
Order forms will also be available to the students during the first week of school if you would rather pay by check.

If you took pictures on Back to Business Days but haven't ordered pictures yet, you will have another chance to do so when the proof comes back either the first or second week of school.  Retakes will be in October.

STUDENT ID CARDS AND VOLUNTEER BADGES
Student ID cards should be ready on the first day of school for those who took pictures at Back to Business Days.  Temporary cards will be given to those who didn't take pictures yet.  For those who take pictures on 9/3, they will be ready that day.

For volunteers who took pictures on Back to Business Days, your badges should be ready during the first week of school.  We will be cross-checking names to see if each LWSD volunteer approval is updated before we hand those out to your students to give to you.

LWSD VOLUNTEER APPROVAL
Do you need to update or check on your LWSD volunteer approval?  Perhaps you have never applied to volunteer in our school district before?  Please click here for more information from the LWSD website.

CHANGE YOUR CONTACT/EMERGENCY INFORMATION ONLINE!
Are you tired of filling out your contact information on the emergency form every year? Wouldn't it be nice to just review your students' information and submit changes online, at your convenience? Starting this month, you have a chance to do just that.  You will be able to log into Parent Access, click on Family Access, and verify your student's information. Make any needed changes then click submit and be done.  More information on the Online Student Information Verification process was posted on the district website in July.

If you don't have a Parent Access account, now would be a good time to set one up.  Just go to the Parent Access Page on the district website for more information.

FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH LIFE-THREATENING HEALTH CONDITIONS
If your child has a life-threatening health condition, the following requirements must be met before your child can attend school. You must supply the required emergency medication, health care provider orders, an individual health plan, and any necessary supplies on or before the first day of school. Until these requirements are met, your child will not be able to attend school. If you have any questions, please call Health Services support personnel at our Special Services Office (425)936-1201.

NEW DISTRICT ELECTRONIC FLYER SYSTEM
On August 24, our district launched a new electronic flyer (or eflyer) system called "Peachjar."  This system will help families learn about events, classes and other programs in our community that may be of interest. It replaces the "Community Bulletin Board" that was on our school's website.

The Peachjar system distributes eflyers from nonprofit organizations as well as from our school and school-related organizations such as PTSAs or booster clubs. Parents will receive direct emails with new eflyers. All approved eflyers will also be posted on the Peachjar page on our school website.

You should have received a welcome email from Peachjar that includes a username and password. This email gives instructions on how to manage your account and flyer delivery preferences. You can determine how often you get these emails and can unsubscribe if you wish. If you do nothing, you will begin receiving one email each day that a flyer is approved.

To ensure smooth delivery of this communication, we suggest that you add lwsd@peachjar.com to your email contacts. When you receive your first eflyer, be sure to click "always display images."

The Peachjar system will only be used for distribution of district- and school-approved flyers. Your email address will not be shared or used for any other purpose.
