PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Hello Evergreen Families-

It was great to see so many of you at our Back to Business Days last week.  Students were all smiles and we look forward to seeing everyone in a few short days.  If you weren't able to come to Back to Business Days, remember that the same activities can be completed online including purchasing an ASB card, yearbook, fitness shirt, and other things necessary for the first days of school.  August is definitely winding down, and we hope your students enjoy the last few days of their summer vacation.  As you read this edition of the Eagle Express, teachers and EMS staff have finished their summer vacation and are busily getting ready for the start of school.  In partnership with the district, we are focused on Growing Together and Serving Our Community.  You may see EMS and LWSD staff members wearing a button with this logo:

We are growing in many ways.  At Evergreen, we are committed to growing students and preparing them for the next step in their educational career.  This is consistent with the District's Vision of Every Student; Future Ready.  In addition to academic growth, we have experienced physical growth.  Because we have more than 1000 students this year, we have added two additional portables bringing our total to 11 with two more slated for next year.  We are also maximizing every inch of space at EMS and have created an additional planning and preparation room so nearly every classroom is used every period.  In addition to our academic and physical growth, we are committed to serving our community.  We look forward to partnering with you this year through PTSA, National Junior Honor Society, HopeLink, the Lake Washington Schools Foundation, and other community partnerships so we can prepare students to lead a rewarding, responsible life as a contributing member of our community and greater society.  In the past, this has included clothing drives, food drives, campus beatification, and a host of other activities.  We look forward to participating in these events again this year as well as creating new opportunities to serve our community.

School starts on Tuesday, September 1 and the first few days of school can take some extra adjusting.  We ask for extra patience with parking, dropping off and picking up your student, reconciling their schedule, assigning their locker and all the elements required to get school up and running.
Listed below are some helpful tips and requests:

Parking and Transportation:
Our bus loop at the top of the hill is designated for busses only.  If you are dropping off or picking up your student from EMS, please pull as far forward in one of our staff parking lots as possible.  After entering the main drive, the parking lot splits into a Y and it is acceptable and appropriate to use both lanes and to pull as far forward as possible.  This allows us to get the maximum number of cars into the parking lot and off the street, thus creating a much safer environment for parent drop off and pick up.  It is not safe for parents to drop off their student on 208th and attempt to dart across traffic.  Please drop off in the EMS parking lot instead.
In addition, we ask that you drop off and pick up only at Evergreen; please do not use Dickinson Elementary School for drop off or pick up.

Class Schedules:
Students will receive their schedule on the first day of school.  Counselors are working hard at scheduling students and placing them in their first choice for electives.  With so many students and limited offerings, it is a complex puzzle to get students in all of their elective requests.  Please know that counselors are doing their best to place students in the classes they requested.
Also, schedule changes may still occur during the first week as counselors are trying to balance classes between all the sections.  Please know that your child's schedule may change during the first week of school but we are trying to keep this to a minimum.

1st Day of School Schedule:
All 6
th graders will come at 8:00am and participate in Where Everybody Belongs (WEB) Activities.  The 8th grade WEB Leaders were here last Thursday and Friday with Ms. Ozeri and Mrs. Leith (WEB Coordinators) and are excited to meet all the 6th graders next week.  We will have a second bus pick up (2 ½ hours after your normal pick up) for all 7th and 8th graders.
Students do not need to bring any materials on the first day of school.  Leave all backpacks, papers, Kleenex, and other school supplies at home until Wednesday.  Students only need to bring their lunch or lunch money on the first day of school.  We will have condensed classes and the schedule is posted on our school website.  The school supply list is also posted on our website under the announcements tab.

Sports and Sports Paperwork:
As a reminder, sports begin on Tuesday, September 8 and all sports paperwork is due on Thursday, September 3.  There are no sports on Wednesdays because of early release and professional development for staff.

Final Thoughts:
September is rapidly approaching and August is fleeting but we hope these last few days at home with your student are relaxing and rewarding.  We look forward to another year of outstanding achievement and growth with your student.  This will be an amazing year at Evergreen and we are excited to embark on this journey together with your family.  We have a fantastic staff committed to growing your student and helping them reach for and achieve their goals and aspirations.

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have questions or concerns about your student's progress.

Thanks and take care and we will see you soon for the first day of school.

Sincerely,

Robert Johnson

SCHOOL NEWS
NEW DISTRICT ELECTRONIC FLYER SYSTEM
On August 24, our district will launch a new electronic flyer (or eflyer) system called "Peachjar."  This system will help families learn about events, classes and other programs in our community that may be of interest. It replaces the "Community Bulletin Board" that was on our school's website.
The Peachjar system distributes eflyers from nonprofit organizations as well as from our school and school-related organizations such as PTSAs or booster clubs. Parents will receive direct emails with new eflyers. All approved eflyers will also be posted on the Peachjar page on our school website.

You will receive a welcome email from Peachjar that includes a username and password. This email gives instructions on how to manage your account and flyer delivery preferences. You can determine how often you get these emails and can unsubscribe if you wish. If you do nothing, you will begin receiving one email each day that a flyer is approved.
To ensure smooth delivery of this communication, we suggest that you add lwsd@peachjar.com to your email contacts. When you receive your first eflyer, be sure to click "always display images."
The Peachjar system will only be used for distribution of district- and school-approved flyers. Your email address will not be shared or used for any other purpose.

CHANGE YOUR CONTACT/EMERGENCY INFORMATION ONLINE!
Are you tired of filling out your contact information on the emergency form every year? Wouldn't it be nice to just review your students' information and submit changes online, at your convenience? Starting this month, you have a chance to do just that.  You will be able to log into Parent Access, click on Family Access, and verify your student's information. Make any needed changes then click submit and be done.  More information on the Online Student Information Verification process was posted on the district website in July.

If you don't have a Parent Access account, now would be a good time to set one up.  Just go to the Parent Access Page on the district website for more information.

FOR PARENTS OF CHILDREN WITH LIFE-THREATENING HEALTH CONDITIONS
If your child has a life-threatening health condition, the following requirements must be met before your child can attend school. You must supply the required emergency medication, health care provider orders, an individual health plan, and any necessary supplies on or before the first day of school. Until these requirements are met, your child will not be able to attend school. If you have any questions, please call Health Services support personnel at our Special Services Office (425)936-1201.

STUDENT ID CARDS AND VOLUNTEER BADGES
Student ID cards should be ready on the first day of school for those who took pictures at Back to Business Days.  Temporary cards will be given to those who didn't take pictures yet.  For those who take pictures on 9/3, they will be ready that day.

For volunteers who took pictures on Back to Business Days, your badges should be ready during the first week of school.  We will be cross-checking names to see if each LWSD volunteer approval is updated before we hand those out to your students to give to you.

LWSD VOLUNTEER APPROVAL
Do you need to update or check on your LWSD volunteer approval?  Perhaps you have never applied to volunteer in our school district before?  Please click here for more information from the LWSD website.

PRE-ORDER YOUR SCHOOL PICTURES
For those who missed Back to Business Days and are taking school pictures on Thurs., 9/3, you can now pre-order those portraits.  Visit Mylifetouch.com  and insert our school's picture day ID for Picture Day on 9/3LS115706Q1.
If you took pictures on Back to Business Days but haven't ordered pictures yet, you will have another chance to do so when the proof comes back either the first or second week of school.  Retakes will be in October.

If you weren't able to give at Back to Business Days you can also send in a donation to the front office with your student.  Look for the blue PTSA "All in One" form in your back to school packet the first week.  We are fortunate that many companies will match your donation ... please check with yours to see if they have a matching program.
