FROM THE PRINCIPAL
|

Hi Evergreen Families,
Last week was Evergreen's first spirit week and many students enthusiastically dressed up and there was definitely a sense of camaraderie. Wednesday was a national Unity Day and students wore orange to stand up against bullying. Unity Day at Evergreen kicked off our yearlong anti-bullying education. The leadership students presented a video during lunchtime on the importance of empathy. In addition, the students documented on a paper scroll ways they can support anti-bullying. Our School Counselors, Dawn Riley and Denise Ozeri, will be administering a school-wide needs assessment to determine student needs for the anti-bullying and positive school culture lessons this year. Furthermore, a new district advisory committee recently started focusing on bullying prevention. The Anti-Bullying Advisory Committee (A-BAC) consists of students, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members. Please let me know if you and/or your child are interested in joining me on this committee.
Friday was Evergreen's first school dance for the year. It was the greatest turn out in years with nearly half our students in attendance dancing to popular music by Evergreen's DJ, Hayden Hall. The students enjoyed dancing on one side of the gym and/or playing games on the other side of the gym. Thank you to the parents and teachers who volunteered to chaperone and the PTSA volunteers for organizing the snack bar!
This Thursday, October 17th, our district is going to participate in the Great Washington Shake Out, a statewide earthquake drill. School safety continues to be a high priority in the LWSD. The LWSD Safety Committee has established monthly safety drills to ensure that all schools are participating in consistent drills across our district. In September, the Evergreen students practiced a fire and evacuation drill and a lockdown drill. Our students did an exceptional job listening to instructions and being quiet during important parts of both drills. We conduct yearly inventories of our safety materials to make sure we are ready in an event of a natural disaster. Thank you for your PTSA emergency supply donations which helps us with purchasing the supplies needed each year.
It continues to be a pleasure to work with Evergreen students and parents. As always, please let Mr. Cassidy or me know if there is any way we can help support your child's learning during these important middle school years.
Sincerely,
Anne Balicki

INFORMATION REGARDING "HAIKU":
A new way to help your student stay on track!
The Haiku Learning Management System is now open for parents to view information on their student(s) and their classes. Haiku is a digital learning environment for classroom communication and collaboration. It's a great tool for parents to use to help their students stay on track.
What parents may view, for those classes with active Haiku sites, includes:
· class announcements
· assignments
· class calendars
· their student's assessment results
· descriptions of discussions, WikiProjects and Wikisites
Teachers are learning to use the tool this year, so not all teachers will have active sites. If you do not see a specific class, you may want to contact your student's teacher.
A page about Haiku has been created in the For Parents section of the district website that provides a tour of Haiku for parents. An additional page with troubleshooting information
is posted there as well.
To log in to Haiku, open an Internet browser and go to this URL: https://lms.lwsd.org. You will use the same username and password that you use to log in to Parent Access on the LWSD website. If you do not have a username and password for Parent Access, go to the Parent Access page on the district website to learn more and sign up.
If you have problems logging in, please email parentquestions@lwsd.org. The district has added support for this email address to help parents get access to this new tool.
FREE BREAKFAST WEEK:
The week of October 14-17th is free breakfast week for schools that normally serve breakfast. In preparation for free breakfast week, this is how the breakfast will work.
All students will be invited to eat a free breakfast that week.
Breakfast will be processed as normal through the Point of Sale. Please review the following in preparation for the free breakfast.
· The student's cards will need to be scanned for breakfast as usual but no money will be taken out of the student's account
· Breakfast key on the cash register will be set to zero for the breakfast price so no students will be charged but we will be able to claim the meals for reimbursement.
· It is imperative that the student's card be scanned so Lake Washington School District will be eligible to receive the federal reimbursement for those meals
· If a student chooses to have a second breakfast, that breakfast will automatically ring up at full price
Thank you for your support in this promotion and serving the students,
Chris Lutgen

Sports Club (Intramurals):
Season one Sports Club (formerly known as Intramurals) sign-ups begin next week! Sports Club is for students in every grade level. It's a great way for students to make new friends as well as get some exercise playing a sport that they enjoy. Students voted and the majority chose soccer as the first Sports Club activity. During sports club, coaches will briefly go over rules, then divide the kids into teams, and let them play and have fun! Season one Sports Club is a two week session (October 28th- November 8th) and takes place after school 2:45 - 4:00 and costs $25. The coaches are Mrs. Jackson and Mr. Martineau. If your son or daughter is interested in playing soccer, be sure to turn in the required paperwork to Mrs. Lewis in the office. All the required forms can be found on the Evergreen website under the "Athletics" tab. If you have any questions about Sports Club, please contact Mr. Burdon (Athletic Director), or Mrs. Lewis (ASB Secretary).

HALLOWEEN SPIRIT DAY:
We would like to announce that October 31st (Halloween) will be an ASB Spirit Day where costumes will be allowed. If students select to wear a costume, which is optional, we ask that it not include a mask or anything that covers the face and for all additional props (fake weapons, fake blood, wands, etc) to stay at home.
LAPTOP INFORMATION:
Five Tips to Help Your Student (and their Computer!) Stay Safe and Keep Learning
Your student has received a laptop computer for his or her educational use at school and at home. Teachers will use this technology to help students acquire the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to succeed in school and beyond.
These powerful tools can be misused, misplaced and mishandled. As parents, you can help your student keep the computer in good shape so it can be used to learn. You can also help them stay safe while using the computer. Here are five tips you can use:
1. Remind your student to charge the battery every night. A charged battery is the first step: without it, your student risks the loss of learning time.
2. Make sure your student allows all updates to run. Updates keep software running smoothly and keep virus/malware and other protection for your student up to date.
3. Remind your student they cannot alter the computer in any way. These computers are loaded with the software they need for learning. They will store documents online in their eBackpack. There is no need to alter the computer for learning. Changing the computer could mean that a student adds things that take time away from learning (games, videos), finds ways around filtering software that blocks inappropriate web sites, or gives a foothold to things that can be destructive like viruses or malware.
4. Strategize with your student where they will store the computer, especially at times when they will be busy.Sometimes, students will have to leave their computers for a few minutes or a few hours. Schools will have specific places to leave the computer for PE or for after school sports. Are there other times your student will need to leave their computer somewhere, where it could become lost or stolen? Talk to your student and help them think through a good solution.
5. Don't lose the power cord! While the computers are the most expensive part of the package, without the power cord, it will soon become unusable. The power cords are specific to the computer model and not easily replaced.

PARENTS GUIDING STUDENTS WITH THE HELP OF PTSA
As each year starts, we realize how quickly time passes, and that our student's educational journey is shifting into high gear. More and more, our students are mapping out their own course (or courses), navigating through relationships (some still under construction), detouring around homework, and perhaps making a wrong turn or two.
As parents we may not be driving our student's education anymore. We may be relegated to the passenger seat - or maybe even the back seat! However, as long as we stay with them through this journey, we can still be their Guiding Parental System (GPS). We can help read the social, education, and job maps, lend a hand with finding the best route, and assist them in finding their way back should they temporarily get lost.
... PTA would like to help parents travel with their students while they learn to "drive" their own futures. We want to help you stay current on school events, activities, volunteer opportunities, and legislation that could affect our students' educational route.
September is PTSA Membership Month. Remember to turn in your EMS Membership form (See below) and maybe even sponsor a membership for a deserving teacher or staff member. You can even bring your completed membership form to Curriculum Night this Tuesday, September 17th-here we go!

PLEASE RESPECT THE WILDLIFE IN OUR AREA ...
Evergreen Middle School is surrounded by a great natural greenbelt and areas of unpopulated wooded land. It's a beautiful landscape that we both admire and respect. Safety is an important factor to consider as well. Last week, we received a phone call about a black bear spotted in a nearby neighborhood. In previous years, we have heard of bobcat and coyote spotted nearby as well. Typically, these animals prefer to avoid people, but they can be dangerous. Please help us work with our students to appreciate and also have a healthy awareness about living in such a beautiful and natural area.
