City launches regional BioLife Campaign to attract industry, jobs

On Feb. 27, the Buck Institute, City of Novato, Novato Chamber of Commerce and the Marin Economic Forum hosted a reception for 120 invited business, community and bioscience industry leaders to release a report on the "State of the Bioscience Industry in Marin County and Novato," and to introduce the marketing team, Chempetitive Group, selected to lead the $1.5 million three-year bio/life marketing and recruitment campaign for the City and its regional partners. For more information on the bio/life science opportunities in Novato & Marin, check out this summary, or contact Economic Development Manager Chris Stewart at cstewart@novato.org or 415.899.8902.

In addition to partnering with the Buck Institute on this effort, the City of Novato Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department co-presented a remarkable exhibition, Scientist as Artist, which featured 20 images by Buck scientists that "convey an evocative story of the art inherent in seeking to understand natural biological mechanisms through research and experimentation." Not to be missed, this exhibit can be seen during regular tours. Call 415.209.2245 to reserve your spot.

 In other news:

The City Council approved the lifting of ground-floor retail restrictions for properties located on secondary streets in Downtown as well as zoning changes to allow religious facilities to locate in certain commercial districts, and also approved a citywide ban on single-use plastic bags. The Council also approved funding for a position in the Novato Police Dept., to be dedicated to the Computer Crimes Task Force, and by a 3-2 vote, the Council also approved both the City's participation in the Community-Based Transportation Plan effort led by TAM, as well as the City's Fiscal Sustainability Plan, which addresses options for the City's long-term financial health. Read more about the City's fiscal sustainability efforts here.
