On Saturday, Dec. 7, Novatans came together for the annual tree lighting event and merry holiday festivities in Downtown Novato. There are so many reasons to STAY LOCAL during the holidays! Come Downtown every Friday night--shops stay open late, Santa is strolling the streets, and visitors can ride the festive Victorian carriage drawn by "Curly" the horse.

Girls Scouts decorating Margaret Todd Senior Center for all to enjoy!

On Dec. 6 and 7, Novato Parks, Recreation and Community Services hosted its annual Holiday Crafts Faire at Margaret Todd Senior Center. The local Girl Scout Troop #30125 decorated the two Christmas trees, donated by Veolia Water and the Faire co-sponsor, the Novato Senior Citizens Club, with handmade ornaments that they always bring for the occasion.

The Faire, also sponsored by the Novato Garden Club, hosted more than 50 Marin and Sonoma County crafters who offered attendees great gift ideas ranging from jewelry, wood works, clothing, ceramics, and fresh greens. Live music and Santa rounded out the holiday cheer at this well-attended event (1300 visitors!). SAVE THE DATE for next year: Dec. 5 & 6, 2014.

In other City news:

Recently, the City Council approved the City's Housing Element, which represented the end of a four-year process of extensive community and City commission input. This milestone allows staff to make progress on the City's General Plan update. Additionally, the City incorporated new state building codes, Council approved the Downtown Business Improvement District assessment for next year, and the City offices moved to its new location at 922 Machin. On December 10, the City Council made their annual appointment of a new Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem.

Novato First in Marin, Sonoma Counties to Launch
Crime-Free Program for Multi-Family Housing

In November, the City Code Enforcement and Police Departments launched a new pilot program assisting property owners and managers to improve, and ultimately reduce and rid, their multi-family properties of crime. There are more than 200 multi-family properties citywide.

At the first seminar, attendees learned about how to best use landscaping, lighting, and other common areas to deter crime, as heard from attorneys about leases and other legal issues related to rental properties. More seminars will follow in the new year. For more information, contact Officer Nicholas Conrad (pictured above) at: nconrad@novato.org or 415.897.4361.

Chinese Youth Sports Delegation Gift; Boosters Keep Gymnastics Program Strong

At their December 3 meeting, the City Council officially received a commemorative gold plate (pictured above) as a gift from the State General Administration of Sport of China--that country's governmental agency which plans, promotes, and develops youth sports. The plate was given in honor of the group's visit to Novato last fall, where the delegation was greeted by Mayor Pat Eklund, PRCS Director Pam Shinault, Recreation, Cultural, and Communities Commissioner Paula Neese, PRCS Division Manager Kevin Conklin, and Recreation Supervisors Perry Siu and Marjorie Blaskower. Due to Siu's role as Chairman of the NorCal Women's Gymnastics Association, and the group's interest in the government-supported recreation program in Novato, the delegation chose the city as one of many stops during their stay in California.

In addition to observing some pre-school gymnastics classes during their visit, the group toured the Novato Gymnastics facility, and learned how the City operates its recreation and sports programsMayor Eklund provided the group with a history of the Gymnastics Center, as well as presented a City of Novato souvenir pin.

DID YOU KNOW: The Novato Gymnastics Boosters donates annually to support the Novato Gymnastics Program. This year, they raised $33,000, for a total of $100,000 in the last five years. In addition, NGB has donated $50,000 for equipment. This funding helps make the Fall Classic and other Novato gymnastic meets possible. For more info, please contact psiu@novato.org or 415.899.8279.
