Pacheco Valley Residents 'Dig' the Dirt
Pacheco Valle resident Gerhard Tripp, assisted by Doug Horn. Photo taken by Ginny Hanna--a Pacheco Valle resident since 1976--and a key volunteer for the project.
On Saturday, Nov. 24, while many of us may have been recovering from a hearty Thansgiving dinner or taking advantage of some local shopping, our neighbors at Pacheco Valle were planting 175 shrubs, flowers and other native plants at the entrance to their neighborhood off of Alameda Del Prado.
This labor of love was prompted by Novato resident, Marcia Basalla, who adopted a large median down the street from the Pacheco Valle entrance in 2009--as part of the City's "Adopt an Island (median)" program. As interested community members stopped by to chat with Marcia, she took down e-mails to share her plant list and progress. Marcia got the interest of Ginny Hanna, who was concerned with the growing weeds at the community entrance, and they both approached the City's Maintenance Supervisor Bill Johnson, who gave them the tools and materials to begin weeding and planting the area. The City utilizes volunteers for many of its programs and projects, as resources--including manpower--dwindle due to budget reductions
Armed with her e-mail list, Marcia, Ginny, and neighbor Peter Logan began to publicize their "weed parties" every weekend. Starting in April, neighbors have been offering their assistance--for up to 4 hours at a time--to pull weeds, clean up trash, and plant native flowers, shrubs, and bushes.
There is still some work to be done, and their next objective, according to Marcia, is to maintain the site and have it "adopted" through the City's program. For more information, please contact City Maintenance Supervisor Bill Johnson or call 899.8959.
Dedicated volunteers include:
Marcia Basalla, Ginny Hanna, Gerhard Tripp, Doug Horn, Gina Purin Margaret Ballou, Lyman Spencer, Cherie Ross, Rob Hauth, Gerhard Jacobs, Diane Griffeath, Ann Brooks, Peter Logan, Ann Moore, Ken Haupt, Aida Bredesen, Leslee Budge, Craig Griffeath, Jeff Dodson, Carol Toepfer, Grant Toepfer, Cathy Pozo |
Novato Children's Brick Quilt Raffle
Novato residents, and quiltmakers, Elayne Miller and Judy Shaw
Left: Quilt back
Right: Quilt front
Get your raffle tickets for the Children's Brick Quilt beginning this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, at the 2012 Holiday Crafts Faire, at the Downtown Tree Lighting on Dec.1, and at "Holiday Friday Nights on Grant under the Novato Theater marquee from Nov. 30-Dec. 21. The concept of the quilt, a brainchild of Novato residents Elayne Miller and Councilmember Jeanne MacLeamy, "materialized" during last year's Spring Egg Hunt from a children's activity at the City's "Buy Your Own Brick" booth--which offered personalized bricks for purchase that are placed at the restored City Hall patio. Many booths at Farmer's Markets later, more than 150 Novato children had drawn pictures, or penned their name, on brick-sized fabric that ended up in this colorful double-sided, twin-bed sized tapestry. Another Novato resident, Judy Shaw, became the quilt "consultant."
Tickets, which will be sold at various events over the next few months, are $2 each or six for $10. Proceeds will benefit the Downtown Novato Theater's "Children's Programs Fund," and the drawing will be held at the 2013 Spring Egg Hunt in Downtown. For more information, please contact Elayne Miller at 415.883.9708. |

City Offices Project Update
Concrete pour in pile caps
The concrete continues to pour at the City Offices project, located in Downtown Novato at 922 Machin Avenue. Depending on the rain expected over the next few days, the remainder of the foundation may be poured in the next couple of weeks. As some rain delays were factored into the original timeline, the project can still be completed on time.To see the progress, check out our webcam, and get more information on our City Offices project webpage.

Local Agencies Prepare for Emergency Relief
On Thursday, Nov. 15, City staff from our Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department, along with staff from nearly every department citywide, participated in a Red Cross-organized Emergency Shelter drill. Other drill participants included the County Health and Human Services, Novato Unified School District, The Marin Center for Independent Living, Marin Medical Reserve Corps, Canal Alliance, and the Marin Humane Society, who coordinated an outdoor pet handing area.
The goal of the drill was to prepare our community for a disaster by running responding agencies and their employees through a comprehensive exercise on how to set-up an emergency shelter with its various stations (e.g. administration, feeding, dormitory, mental health). Participants were able to role-play both the provider and client roles.
For disaster preparedness training, contact the Bay Area Chapter of the American Red Cross at 1-888-4-HELP-BAY. |

Learn more about the people in the City who serve you: Matt Podolin is our featured employee of the month.
Management Analyst Matt Podolin
How long have you worked for the City and what is your role?
I have worked for the City for the last year and a half, and I'm currently the Management Analyst for the Novato Response Team (NRT). I was previously a Management Analyst Intern in the Administrative Services Department.
The NRT focuses on public safety and community problem solving. It consists of Corporal Nick Frey, Officers Nick Conrad and Nick Berg, and myself. As the Management Analyst for the team, I help coordinate projects and processes, as well as provide data analysis.
What do you like best about your position with the City?
I'm excited to work with the NRT to help improve public safety and quality of life in Novato. The team collaborates with a wide range of partners including business, nonprofits, and other community organizations.
I am enjoying working with people from different sectors and learning from their experiences. There has also been a tremendous amount of support for innovation and creative problem solving on this team. It's exciting and energizing to work with great colleagues on new approaches to some of Novato's challenges.
What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am proud to be working with the NRT and to be able to impact the program as it grows. It is a great opportunity to contribute to the community.
What is an interesting fact about you? Maybe a hidden talent?
After college, I moved to Nairobi, Kenya to be the Site Manager of the newly-launched Kibera School for Girls. The school provides free education for some of the brightest and most at-risk girls in Kenya's largest slum. |
