Spotlight On... A Trinity of Alumni Worship Leaders
One of the benefits of attending DMCS for budding musicians is the opportunity to lead worship in chapel. As school leaders, we pray those leadership gifts will grow and bloom far beyond DMCS. Three young men in Iowa City personify the answer to this prayer.
Nathan Meyer graduated from DMCS in 1997, a year of firsts: he was a member of the first VICTORY singers and a starter on first DMCS basketball team to reach the State Tournament. He Co-Captained the soccer team. Reflecting on his high school experience, Nathan stated, "At DMCS I had the opportunity to begin leading worship at chapel and to start developing a passion for serving God through music and leading God's people into worship. Since then, I've lead worship in three different churches and, most recently as the Worship Director at Grace Community Church." After being employed for 2 ½ years at Grace, Nathan recently returned to his previous employer, Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, where he works as a Senior Systems Engineer. He still joins the Grace worship team at services about once a month. Nathan and Rachel Meyer are the parents of Elijah -7, Eleanor-5, Isaiah-4, and Silas-2.
Greg Mazunik, '01, was active in Jazz Band, Choir, Victory, and baseball. He now serves as the Director of Worship and Arts at Parkview Evangelical Free Church. He fondly recalls the "cumulative effect" of DMCS, deep friendships that grew from kindergarten through high school, and teachers who poured truth in his life. Although he enjoyed leading chapel worship at DMCS, he never really thought he would be a worship pastor, as it seemed "rather cliché for a church kid," but God had other plans for him. About serving in Iowa City, Greg reflected, "When I compare life in Iowa City to Des Moines, sin is sin. Every place is dark and every place needs Jesus." Greg encourages Christian educators to, "press into the gospel and help students apply it to real world situations, developing their faith." Greg and his wife Kinsey (Gilbert) '01 have a two-year-old son, Garrison.
The seeds of worship music were planted in James Laugerman, '07, at his family's church when he began writing songs in high school for fun. He now serves as Worship Leader at Veritas Church. James was in 8th grade at DMCS when math teacher Clint Luscombe's wife passed away. "Mr. Luscombe made such an impact on me," said James. "Just seeing him grieve through that - he still had joy. I'll always remember that." He learned best from teachers who didn't just give him knowledge, but modeled the fruit of their lives. "When teachers were authentic, it made such an impact on me. The role of teachers should always be to point people to God... the river of life." James and his wife Deanna welcomed their first daughter, Maely, who was born in April 2013.

Early Education Adopts New Curriculum
DMCS' Early Education Department will be using Teaching Strategies GOLD for the 13-14 school year. TSG is an ongoing comprehensive assessment tool for birth through kindergarten. It covers all areas of development: social-emotional, physical, language, and cognitive, as well as content learning in literacy, mathematics, science and technology, social studies, and arts. TSG has a color-coded progression for each objective and allows parents and teachers to see a full range of development and learning. The tool recognizes that development and learning is interrelated. It is a seamless tool which allows information to be passed on from year-to-year and provided to the student's kindergarten teacher. It is based on the latest research, proven valid and reliable, and is aligned with Iowa's early learning standards. Teachers will use the assessment tool to determine and plan instruction for each individual child and the whole class.

Pure Joy Whenever
 |
Keynote Speaker Sarah Veurink and Elementary Principal Karla Lowe
|
What does it mean to have pure joy? Our youngest keynote speaker, Fifth Grader Sarah Veurink, shared 5 biblical points on our 2012-13 theme verse at the Annual Benefit. (James 1:1-2) "You don't have to be super happy all the time. Be thankful and content with what you have - don't have a lousy attitude. Don't be afraid to have joy. When you are going through a hard time, it's hard to be joyful. "When my dad was sick (and went to Heaven two years ago), I thought I had an exception from joy. None of us has an exception because we are God's representatives."
Praise God for providing $136,000 through the Benefit, including $60,000 for needs-based tuition assistance for families seeking Christ-centered education for their children.

Seussical the Musical Sets Attendance Record
 |
Cole Juckette, '13 (Cat in the Hat) and Harrison Roose, '18 (Jojo)
|
DMCS Community,
Thank you for supporting the drama department with your attendance at Seussical the Musical. We had a grand total of 1,600 audience members attend the show over the course of four performances. We give God the glory! I have attended many local productions, and the ability of our students rivals many community theatres and local 4A schools! We may not have their budget, but God has given us students with amazing ability. We are truly blessed!
In Christ,
Mrs. Ashley Skinner, Drama Director
Mrs. Joy Augustine, Vocal Music Director

Girl's Basketball Team Thrives in '13
 | Elsa Anderson ('15) scores an easy basket inside |
The Lady Lions finished the 2012-13 season with a 18-5 overall record. Michael Cowell, first year coach, helped lead the Lady Lions to a second place finish in the West Central Activities Conference. Highlighting the girl's season was a win over conference champion Panorama as well as a win at the Dordt College Invitational. Garnering all conference selections were senior Tiffany Stubbs (1st team) and sophomore Brittany Zimmer (2nd team). Rounding out the senior class and making great contributions to the team were Halie Behr, Linnea Stephens, and Hailey Nicolet. The Lady Lions were consistently ranked in the top fifteen in class 2A this season and will look to build on that success next year.

Lions Undefeated in Conference
 |
Jared Jones ('13) elevates over the defender for two points
|
The Des Moines Christian Lions boy's basketball team had a very successful 2012-13 campaign. The Lions, led by coach Todd Miller, compiled a 21-3 overall record and went undefeated in the West Central Activities Conference. Leading the way for the Lions this year were Jared Jones and Keaton Anfinson, both 1st Team All Conference selections. Jared was also selected as a 2nd Team All State player in class 2A. Coach Miller utilized a deep bench and played eleven players on a regular basis. Along with Jared and Keaton, the Lions will graduate seniors Connor Wohlenhaus, Travis Manderfield, and Nick Gerlach. The deep bench along with successful seasons by the junior varsity and freshman teams bodes well for continued success in 2013-14.

Changing the World One Student At a Time
Mae Dunker ('14) was recently nominated and invited to speak at this year's local TEDx event at the Temple for Performing Arts on Thursday, April 18th. TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to ideas worth sharing. Mae was one of only a handful of students selected to share an inspiring message for the world to see and hear. Miss Dunker asked the audience, of two hundred plus, to consider their life's calling. For her, it has been serving Christ by serving others. Her passion for service is rooted right here in Des Moines working with refugee children at Zion Lutheran Church. Miss Dunker let everyone know what makes this ministry flourish is the volunteer efforts of teenagers who are committed to serving on a weekly basis, many being DMCS students.
