"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." (James 1:2-4)

Opening Joke, Quote, Scripture, and Prayer
|
Opening Line of a Joke:
I used to be indecisive, but. . . .
This Week's Opening Quote:
"There is nothing more important than your eternal salvation." (Kirk Cameron, 1970-, American actor and Christian evangelist)
This Week's Scripture:
". . .thanks be to God who gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Corinthians 15:57, English Standard Version)
This Week's Opening Prayer:
"Indeed, God, thanks be to YOU for giving us victory through Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ! I thank You for my salvation! Help me to live a life more pleasing to You, as I, moment-by-moment, appreciate being saved by Jesus! Amen!"

School-Wide Announcements

To honor Des Moines Christian custodian Marshall Henderson for courageously completing his recent regimen of radiation treatments for cancer, the school celebrated Tropical Day on Thursday, April 25, 2013. We are so proud of Mr. Henderson, and he has blessed us immeasurably with his words of encouragement extended to all of us during his treatment. I praise God for a community which grieves with those who grieve and rejoices with those who rejoice. We rejoice with Marshall in this opening stage of his treatment journey, and join me in praying for full restoration of his health. May he one day be cancer-free! Thank you, students, for getting into the spirit of Tropical Day. Pictured above is Mikah Shattuck is his celebratory sartorial splendor. He is but one of dozens who locked arms with Mr. Henderson on this day!
You must read the testimonial of an orchestra member who complimented the entire Des Moines Christian community for the recent performances of Seussical the Musical: "I wanted to say thank you for allowing me to play for your school's musical last week. I enjoyed it all very much. I was particularly impressed with the school and family audience support for the performances. DMCS packs in more audience than any of the other schools and community theaters that I have played for over the years. Many of these other places were much bigger, too, but the DMCS play was high-quality, better attended, and very well organized - a fun experience to be sure! I really appreciated the recognition on the final evening. I keep mementos from all the plays for which I have played, but this is the first time I have received a signed thank you from the actors and actresses of a play, and this written thanks will be kept in my scrapbook. The coffee card was very much appreciated, too. Everyone was very appreciative and the verbal thank you's are always icing on the cake. I thank all of the musical staff and all of the actors and actresses. They were all a pleasure to work with, and, of course, I appreciate the acknowledgment of our Lord Jesus as the focal point. May God bless your day!" What wonderful words of encouragement about community members who treasure the arts and treasure the Lord Jesus Christ!
I had the distinct honor to meet and interact with Simon Estes on Friday of last week and Tuesday of this week! For those of you who do not know of Mr. Estes, he is an internationally-acclaimed bass opera singer who rose to this platform from humble beginnings in Centerville, Iowa. He is a very godly man who makes his faith central to his work as a college professor, singer, and minister of the Gospel. God has placed a burden on Mr. Estes' heart, which was the reason for his visit to Des Moines, and you will be hearing more about that from me in the future. I was privileged to meet him last week, and then he visited Des Moines Christian on the 23rd. During our tour throughout the building, he spoke glowingly of our facilities, students, staff, and Christ-centered programming. A special moment occurred in the Elementary Music Room with Elementary Music Instructor Mary Kay Hoogerwerf and a group of sixth grade students. Mrs. Hoogerwerf directed the sixth graders in a performance of a spiritual, and Mr. Estes offered extremely positive feedback to her and them. His humility and godliness really shone. What a cool opportunity for Des Moines Christian!
How 'bout that Big Blue Bash on Saturday, April 20th?! I LOVED IT, as always! The Parent Teacher Fellowship has my undying regard for the work they do in preparing for and delivering such an amazing event -- and ALL of the money goes back to Des Moines Christian students, teachers, and parents in some way! The primary benefactors from the Big Blue Bash are parents who fall on tough times and benefit from one tuition payment, compliments of PTF's Emergency Tuition Fund. So that cost is worth the fever pitch excitement of the gym, MPR, and trophy case hallway. That cost is worth the hours poured into baking beautiful cakes and cupcakes for the cake walk. That cost is is worth the organization of a thousand moving parts. That cost is worth the collection and "sales" of tremendous theme baskets. That cost is worth the set-up and offering of wonderful concessions and spirit wear. And that cost is worth getting dunked repeatedly in a dunk tank without any water! God bless PTF for their support of Des Moines Christian School!
Congratulations to Randy Stromley for being re-elected to the Des Moines Christian School Board during the Association meeting on Tuesday, April 23, 2013! Congratulations, too, to newly-elected 2013-2016 Directors Dave Bruxvoort and Tim Hall! Also, congratulations to retiring Directors Stuart Johnsrud and Cary Peterson for their positive legacy on the Board! Thanks to the Association members who attended the meet-and-greet event with the candidates and who attended the Association meeting immediately thereafter. We'd love to see more participation at Association meetings in 2013-2014 (once in the fall and once in the spring). If you would like to read the draft minutes of Tuesday's Association meeting, please click here. If you would like to read the outline of my "State of the School Address," please click here.

Please meet Hannah De Cleene, long-term Substitute Secondary Spanish Teacher for Jill Madison, who is on medical leave for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year.
Where have you been working in the past? I just got back from teaching English in Ecuador for nine months, and I taught at Grandview Park Baptist School for two years before that.
Where did you go to college? I went to Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny.
Why do you believe God has called you to DMCS? I was in Ecuador, praying for God's direction, as the school I worked at made poor management decisions, so there wasn't much work for the teachers. I applied for a job at DMCS in 2010, so Mr. Temperley got my name from that application and contacted me. It was the direction I was looking for from God.
What is a fun fact about yourself? I grew up in Ecuador!
What's your favorite Ecuadorian food? Plantain!
Mae Dunker ('14) was recently nominated and invited to speak at this year's local TEDxevent at the Temple for Performing Arts on Thursday, April 18. TED is a non-profit organization devoted to ideas worth sharing. Mae Dunker was one of only a handful of students selected to share an inspiring message for the world to see and hear. Miss Dunker asked the audience of two hundred plus to consider their life's calling. For her, it has been serving Christ by serving others. Her passion for service is rooted right here in Des Moines, working with refugee children at Zion Lutheran Church. Miss Dunker let everyone know that what makes this ministry flourish is the volunteer efforts of teenagers who are committed to serving on a weekly basis, many being DMCS students. Please look for forthcoming updates on the DMCS website about how you can view Miss Dunker's inspiring speech!
The results are in for the 2013 Worldview Week Survey. What a week it was! The students and faculty were given a brief survey after the event and asked to rate three areas of the Worldview Week-music, speaker, and small group experiences. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the highest rating, the average for music was 8.13, speaker 9.32, and small groups 8.22. To God be the glory for the extremely positive mpact of the week!
Congratulations to the 8th grade Knowledge Bowl Team
for their outstanding performance and win at the Merle Hay Knowledge Bowl competition last week! The team of eight graders Nathan Oakes, Matt Brightman, Katie Armstrong, Jacob Conn, and Leah Wilson placed first and did a fantastic job of representing DMC! DMC is a force to be reckoned with at our Knowledge Bowl competitions. In addition to the 8th grade win, the Knowledge Bowls teams have won both the High School competition and the West Central Activities Conference Academic Bowl this year!
Ashley Skinner, Secondary Language Arts Teacher, is tutoring upper elementary, junior high, and high school students in grammar and/or writing this summer. She is available twice a week (either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday) in the afternoons for hour-long sessions at $30 an hour.
Congressman Tom Latham would like to invite all interested high school students and their parents to attend his Military Academy Days. These days will help students and their parents familiarize themselves with the application and nomination process to any of the nation's five service academies. This event will be held on Saturday, June 15th from 9:30 a.m. until Noon at the Iowa National Guard Gold Star Museum. See Secondary Counselor Cindy Kostek for more information.
Hope Ministries will be hosting a Wake Up Call event on Friday evening, April 26th. This event is for 5th-12th grade students and will feature Lizzie Velasquez, who overcame insecurities due to a rare medical condition. More information may be found here.

Business Office News

Des Moines Christian families, and prospective DMCS families, our school offers two forms of needs-based financial assistance to our K-12 families. The first are School Tuition Organization (STO) funds which come to us from the Heart of Iowa STO. Eligibility is clearly defined by the Iowa Department of Revenue, and, if your family is eligible for this funding, we encourage you to submit your application to the Business Office, attention Julia Veenstra, DMCS Business Manager. Below is a link to this form that can be printed from our website. Families must apply each year, and applications for the 2013-2014 school year should be submitted by June 1. Funds are distributed in July and again in December.
The second form of tuition assistance is primarily for those families who are not eligible for the STO funds. To apply, your family must complete an online application and mail copies of tax returns to an organization named FAST. This FAST organization reviews your total financial picture and makes a scholarship recommendation to the DMCS Business Manager. There is no clear income threshold for this grant. The recommendation is dependent on the number of people in your immediate family, the number of students you have enrolled at DMCS, your income, your net worth, and your current expenses. Please contact DMCS Business Manager Julia Veenstra with any questions you have about this grant or the application process. A link to the application is also included in this e-mail. Families must apply each year, and applications for 2013-2014 should be submitted by May 1. Grants will be distributed during the first week of June.
Application for needs-based assistance is confidential. This application information is available only to the Business Manager. For accountability purposes, a list of scholarship recipients is given to me, Dr. Bob Stouffer, DMCS Superintendent, and Nate Schelhaas, the DMCS Board Treasurer.

Out of the Mouth of Babes

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4- to 8-year-olds, "What does love mean?"The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined! See what you think:
"Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well." (Tommy, 6)
"During my piano recital, I was on a stage, and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling." (Cindy, 8) Yes, that's love!

For Our Grandparents

Story #1: Children's Logic: "Give me a sentence about a public servant," said the teacher. The small boy wrote: "The fireman came down the ladder pregnant." The teacher took the lad aside to correct him. "Don't you know what pregnant means?" she asked. "Sure," said the young boy confidently. "It means carrying a child."
Story #2: A grandfather was delivering his grandchildren to their home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children started discussing the dog's duties. "They use him to keep crowds back," said one child. "No," said another. "He's just for good luck." A third child brought the argument to a close. "They use the dogs," she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrants
