Editing and Periodic Writing by Dr. Bob Stouffer, Superintendent Development by Marilyn Wilson and Published by Lisa Fitzgerald
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything." (James 1:2-4)

Opening Joke, Quote, Scripture, and Prayer
|
Opening Line of a Joke:
Cartoonist found dead in home. . . .
This Week's Opening Quote:
Someone once asked famed Bible commentator G.K. Chesterton, "What's wrong with the world?" He answered, "I am." (G.K. Chesterton, 1974-1935)
This Week's Scripture:
Why is there evil in the world? "He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil." (1 John 3:8, New King James Version)
This Week's Opening Prayer:
"Lord, I am so quick to self-righteously judge others. Would You humble me, Lord? Would You cause me to take the plank out of my own eye before attempting to take the speck out of another person's eye?! G.K. Chesterton was exactly right. What's wrong with the world? I am. Lord, when you said, "I Am," your majesty, power, authority, and righteousness shone brilliantly! I am a part of the problem in the world! My sin and selfishness separate me from You and others. I know my eternal state is secure, and periodic sin is not enough to take away my salvation. You sealed me at the point of my redemption. But I pray that I will sin less frequently. And I certainly pray for those who do not know You - and who sin willfully against You. Those people are, honestly, "of the devil." Jesus was made manifest on this earth, that He might destroy the works of the devil. And He did!! HE DID! Praise Jesus! As a result, we fight FROM victory, not FOR victory. So help me in my self-control as I face-off temptation and sin. Amen!"

School-Wide Announcements

To Everyone Who Had a Part in Delivering Seussical the Musical to the Des Moines Christian Community: Well, the school was abuzz like I'd never seen it on a Monday morning after a weekend! EVERYONE -- and I mean EVERYONE -- was talking about Seussical the Musical! There are not enough superlatives to review this show! Spectacular! Magnificent! Amazing! Phenomenal! Fun! Wow! I, Dr. Bob, had a blast at the matinee on Saturday afternoon. My chest was swelling with absolute pride for the high-quality production that was a result of the talents of directors, actors, actresses, orchestra members, and support crew alike! Starting with the Thursday night opener, ALL were excited about the musical! The show was for young and old alike! I was so pleased to see pre-school, child care, Elementary, and Secondary students at the performance on Saturday afternoon. I grew up with Dr. Seuss. I was born in 1958, which was right when his magical and imaginative books were in the hands of my mother, a kindergarten teacher. I think Seuss books were a major reason for my love of reading! So I took a very enjoyable trip down Memory Lane on Saturday! Thank you for giving your talents to God for His use through you, everyone! God was definitely glorified through your talents and PURE JOY WHENEVER you sang, spoke, gyrated, ad libbed, and entertained! I praise God for Acting Director Ashley Skinner, Musical Director Joy Augustine, and all of the junior high and high school students who lifted our spirits in joy! To God be all praise and honor and glory! AMEN!
Regarding Seussical the Musical, Mrs. Skinner wrote, "DMCS Community, THANK YOU for supporting the drama department with your attendance at Seussical this past weekend! We had a grand total of 1,600 audience members attend the show over the course of four performances! It was particularly amazing that so many families from Early Education, Elementary, and Secondary came together to enjoy the same show. Needless to say, we were extremely honored and humbled. We give God the glory! We have so much student talent at DMCS. They continually impress me! I have attended many local productions, and the ability of our students rivals many community theatres and local 4A schools! We may not have their budget, but God has given us students with amazing ability. We are truly blessed! Let the record show... it is a huge testament to Mrs. Augustine's teaching ability and vocal talent! I also want everyone to know that Helen Cheramie, Diana Augspurger, Janelle Larson, Dave Gardino, Linda Gustafson, Jody Keithley, Sharon Zonnefeld, Lauren McCool (former Secondary English Teacher Lynn McCool's daughter-in-law), Henry Vande Voort, and Craig Miles really made this show happen. They donated so much time, money, and energy to the drama department (and not just this year but every year I have been here). I'm humbled by their generosity. Please thank them if you see them around! Next year's show is already in the works! While I have everyone here, would you please let me know if you have connections to a local church or theatre that might be willing to house us for the 2014 play? We are out-growing Jordan Hall, and I am on the hunt for another venue. We are looking for somewhere that has seating for around 450-500, a quality light and sound system, and a flexible schedule which would allow our students to rehearse on the stage with our set for around 3 weeks before the show. It would be an added bonus if we could find somewhere that would allow us to build and paint our set gradually on their stage. That would be the ideal scenario; it's not a necessity. Thank you for your support of the drama department! We are growing fast, and it is a joy to be a part of it."

Jill Frey, Secondary Administrative Assistant, offered the following testimony to the influence of Des Moines Christian and the school and home working as partners: "I am e-mailing you after much prayer and consideration. I do not want to sound boastful in anyway, yet want to give credit to DMCS for helping to send off a leader. We received a letter last week from the dormitory advisor, and she has nominated Elliott (Jill and Mike's son, DMC '12) for an "Outstanding Leader of the Year" award, which is a campus-wide recognition at Iowa State University. At this time, we don't know if he will receive this award, but, at any rate, it is a huge honor for him to be nominated with such a large student body. He is also being trained to be a SALT Company leader next year, which we are even more delighted about. (Salt Company is a large Christ-centered ministry which draws as many as 1,200 worshippers at Cornerstone Church on Thursday evenings.) We feel extremely blessed that we were able to partner with DMC. Do with my testimony what you will. I just can't say enough about the students that are leaving this school and I know there are many other graduates doing great things. We boast in the Lord, and all the glory should be given to God and not us!" Well said, Jill! I praise God for DMC graduates like Elliott Frey. During Worldview Week last week, Salt Company's Mike Vance, our speaker, could not stop talking about the half-dozen LEADERS from Des Moines Christian who are making a huge impact on the ministry! (By the way, we are pleased that Elliott will be serving as one of our assistant baseball coaches this summer!)
Congressman Tom Latham would like to invite all interested high school students and their parents to attend his Military Academy Days. These days will help students and their parents familiarize themselves with the application and nomination process to any of the nation's five service academies. This event will be held on Saturday, June 15th from 9:30 a.m. until Noon at the Iowa National Guard Gold Star Museum. See Secondary Counselor Cindy Kostek for more information.

Out of the Mouth of Babes
|
A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, "What does love mean?" The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined! See what you think:
"If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate." (Nikka, 6)
"Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it every day." (Noelle, 7)

For Our Grandparents
|
Story #1: When my 5-year-old grandson asked me how old I was, I teasingly replied, "I'm not sure." "Look in your underwear, Grandpa," he advised. "Mine says I'm 4 to 6."
Story #2: A second grader came home from school and said to her grandmother, "Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today." The grandmother, more than a little surprised, tried to keep her cool. "That's interesting," she said. "How do you make babies?" "It's simple," replied the girl. "You just change the 'y' to 'I' and add 'es'." |
