PureJoy

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."  (James 1:2-4)
Did You Know?
Junior High Math Teacher, Mrs. Veenstra, once cuddled with cheetahs in South Africa.

Opening Joke, Quote, Scripture, and Prayer

Opening Line of a Joke:

What do you call a dinosaur with an extensive vocabulary?

This Week's Opening Quote:

"Imagination is a God-given gift; but if it is fed dirt by the eye, it will be dirty. All sin, not least sexual sin, begins with the imagination. Therefore what feeds the imagination is of maximum importance in the pursuit of kingdom righteousness." (D.A. Carson, 1946-, Canadian-born, Reformed evangelical theologian and professor of the New Testament)

This Week's Scripture:

But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. . . . (Ephesians 5:3-4, English Standard Version)

This Week's Opening Prayer:

"Lord, I am a filthy rag in Your sight. My sin overwhelms me. I am undone by my temptations, including those which result from our sex-saturated culture. Help me to be sexually pure. Help me to remain 'proper' in the arena of physical intimacy. Let no filthiness, foolish talk, or crude joking come out of my mind or mouth. Help me to replace those impure thoughts and words with thanksgiving and whatever is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and praiseworthy. God, I praise You for not looking at me as a filthy rag, but as one of Your beloved children. Lord, our junior high and high school students were challenged this week to be beyond reproach in the arena of human sexuality. Would You, through the power of Your Holy Spirit, allow them to resist the sexual temptations in their lives. Amen."

Development Office News

A very warm thank you to all who participated in the 26th Annual Benefit and Auction on April 5th, raising over $131,000 to-date for the scholarship fund and general fund! Praise the Lord for His continuing provision to Des Moines Christian School! The Auction Committee worked tirelessly to organize a great auction; students performed brilliantly and served beautifully; Fifth Grader Sarah Veurink gave a touchingly courageous message; administrators and teachers filled their roles beautifully; many volunteers helped in all areas; Dr. Bob gave a moving testimony about lavish "prodigal" love; and Lutheran Church of Hope again extended wonderful hospitality in a superb venue. Special thanks to Development Events Coordinator Peggy Lettow, who pulled all the details together in a fun-filled, inspiring evening - and to Marketing Manager Lisa Fitzgerald for much collateral support!  In Christ's name, Samona Yentes, Director of Development

Out of the Mouth of Babes

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, "What does love mean?" The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined! See what you think:

"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss"  (Emily, 8)

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas, if you stop opening presents and listen." (Bobby, 7)

For Our Grandparents

Story #1: I didn't know if my granddaughter had learned her colors yet, so I decided to test her. I would point out something and ask what color it was. She would tell me and was always correct. It was fun for me, so I continued. At last, she headed for the door, saying, "Grandma, I think you should try to figure out some of these colors yourself!"

Story #2: When my grandson Billy and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside - to keep from attracting pesky insects. Still, a few fireflies followed us in. Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use Grandpa. Now the mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights."
