PureJoy

"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."  (James 1:2-4)
Did You Know?
Mrs. Hoogerwerf, Elementary Music Teacher, was Assistant Organist at her church at age 13!

Opening Quote, Scripture, and Prayer

This Week's Opening Quote:

"Christmas, my child, is love in action. Every time we love, every time we give, it's Christmas." (Dale Evans, American actress, 1912-2001)

This Week's Scripture:
"And [Mary] gave birth to her first born son. . . .Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart." (Luke 2:7, 19)

This Week's Prayers:

"Father God, thank You for sending Jesus to earth. Yours was SUCH an act of love! I am grateful for Your love, Lord. As Mary did, help me to continually treasure up and ponder the miracle of Jesus' birth. Help EVERY day to be "Christmas." Help me to love. Help me to show love in action. Thank You, Lord. Amen."

Note From the Van Heukelom Family

We want to thank the entire DMCS family for the love and support you have given our family over the past 2 months. The prayers, meals, gift cards, and donations to our tuition account have absolutely blown us away.  We want to let you know that it hasn't gone unnoticed or unappreciated.  We would not have been able to get through Brenda's hospitalization and recovery without your help.  While it is hard to accept the help, we humbly thank you for it.  It is totally awesome to see the body of Christ come together and support each other.  We long for the opportunity to repay even a fraction of what was given to us.  We have relied on God for everything in which He has shown us what it truly means to provide for our needs.  Please know that you are a part of God's provision to our family.  We hope you have a Merry Christmas and enjoy time with your family.  We will most definitely be rejoicing in the birth of Christ!  Love, Josh, Brenda, Ashley, Addison, and Aaron Van Heukelom

Development Office News

Des Moines Christian School is committed to sound budget planning that balances the cost of faculty compensation and program improvements with the cost of tuition. To maintain that balance, the Gift Registry provides an opportunity to fund items that enhance the value of our educational offerings and improve our facilities outside of the general fund operating budget.  Please click here to see the current gift registry.

A Heartfelt "Thank You" to The Many Who Served During Grandparents Day!

  • "Victory" singers, along with their director, Joy Augustine, who performed delightfully at the Iowa Machine Shed grandparents' planned giving luncheon
  • Heather Rowley and Eileen Van Kooten-Schmitt, who handled the Open House; this was no simple task!
  • Secondary teachers Kimberly Kolling (Secondary Student Council Advisor) and Carolyn Oakes - both revved up students to serve!
    • Many senior high Secondary Student Council members who helped at the Open House
    • A large number of junior high students who handed out programs and grandparent gifts during the Elementary concerts
  • Mark Linebach, school parent and owner of Cozy Café, who donated and set up coffee for our Open House
  • Molly Repp, our Development Office Student Assistant, who helped with a myriad of things
  • "The parking guys," who worked alongside a Police Officer at the Grace parking lot - we averted the chaos of a couple years ago!
  • Staff person Janet Hoegh, and her Secondary study hall students, who stuffed 2,000 concert programs with an insert.

"Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does..." (Ephesians 6:7)

Elementary News
Elementary Music Instructor Mary Kay Hoogerwerf writes, "What a JOY it was to take our Praise and Worship Choir out into the community [on Tuesday, December 11, 2012] to minister to others!  The students not only sang beautifully, exclaiming praises to our Lord and Savior, but they were also an EXCELLENT representation of our school through their superb conduct and Christ-like attitude...even on the bus! It was so nice that we were able to visit with the seniors at our first and last locations...the rooms came alive with conversation between the young and old!  It was a very memorable and fun-filled day.  I want to express my sincere thanks to our bus chaperones for their precious time and assistance on our trip:  Jennifer Durick, Liz Godfrey, Pat Stowers, and Kristi Wittrock. I'm so glad they could accompany us. I am also truly thankful to Nicole Fleming and Pam Baker for transporting our sound system, making sure it was set up before we arrived at each location, and for running the sound so proficiently!  Their role on this trip was a huge relief to me and crucial to our success!  It is such a blessing to be able to teach your children music at DMCS!  May you and your loved ones have a very BLESSED Christmas and a Happy New Year! In Christ, Mary Kay Hoogerwerf"
Athletics News

And God said, "Let there be water!" AND THERE WAS WATER sprinkling on the Des Moines Christian campus!!  (I hope that's neither heretical nor offensive to you.) At 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8th, I (Dr. Bob) witnessed the new system sprinkling the entire softball field!  It looked as there was excellent coverage -- with a dewey moisture on all of the grass and dirt and moisture evident on the outfield fences! The system works! Praise the Lord for this new addition to the campus grounds!  Praise the Lord for the donor who was willing to fund this project!  And praise the Lord for the Board's generous willingness to take this project out of the capital fundraising sequence!  Let us all enjoy this wonderful new feature on the DMC property -- one which will ultimately tie into a even more comprehensive irrigation system for the landscaping and football/soccer field in the future!

Looking for Christmas gift ideas for the Lions fan in your life? Support your school and purchase DMCS spirit wear!  Spirit wear orders submitted by December 17 will be ready by December 21.
PTF News

Deanna Skokan writes, "I just finished processing Box Tops from last Friday [December 7, 2012], and I had to admit, it gave me that warm fuzzy feeling knowing DMCS has some great students -- 27 students donated their 10 Box Tops to Joshua Christian Academy in Des Moines!!  Many of these students were not the typical students who always turn some in monthly.  For many of these students, it was their FIRST TIME this year turning in Box Tops.  I know JCA will be blessed by their generosity and caring hearts!!  I want to thank the teachers for encouraging the students to donate their Box Tops to JCA, especially the 4th-6th grade teachers!!  The response in those grades was overwhelming!"

Mission Christmas: The Giving Trees

The Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF), along with the 8th and 9th graders, invite everyone (EE-12th grade) to bring either paper items or Box Tops to donate to Joshua Christian Academy or corn and toilet paper to donate to Hope Ministries' Bethel Mission facility. Every student who brings in an item, they will get to help decorate our 4 "Live" Christmas Trees - Dr. Bob, Mr. Temperley, Mrs. Lowe, and Mrs. Dickinson. For more information, click here.
