Product Feature:   Yale Environmental Sustainability

As reported by Michael P. Brogan, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NMHG and the Yale Industrial Truck Brand, Environmental sustainability is one of the most critical issues faced by today's generation. Our choices- whether at home or at work-impact the air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat and the land we enjoy. Our world is not only becoming more interconnected through economics, communications and transportation, we are also growing environmentally interdependent. Just as nations have begun to take responsibility for environmental sustainability, many industries in the business sector have begun to do the same. Within the materials handling industry, there are numerous opportunities to positively impact the environment. Our industry provides equipment that enables the optimum flow of goods, which is essential to a vibrant economy. To the extent that we can achieve this while improving air quality, reducing energy consumption, reducing waste, increasing recycling and increasing safety-we strive to contribute positively to environmental sustainability. At NACCO Materials Handling Group, Inc. (NMHG), we are first improving efficiency ...

Safety Feature: Overloaded Forklifts & Racking

Three warning signs your forklifts or racks are being overloaded:

Whether you are selling or buying in the material handling industry there is always a need to find the best solution available.  The Solution Selling Series provides all those in the industry with a road map that mutually provides objective relevancy, technical expertise, and above all true solutions that allow both the buyer and the seller to connect without complication to deliver achievable and sustainable results.

With approximately 1 million forklifts or powered industrial vehicles operating in the United States alone, a CNN report states that the top three common forklift accidents, according to an Arizona study are vehicle tip overs, overloading &collisions. In this Solutions Selling Series, we will address the issues associated with lift truck overload. The 3 major warning signs are........

LIFT TRUCK STRUCTURAL ISSUES: Lift trucks are engineered to handle a very specific rated load. For safety reasons, there is usually a 10% overload capacity built into the calculations, however, to maximize the life of the equipment, most manufacturers recommend using the trucks at 75-80% of the rated load. Failure to abide by these rules of thumb can result in premature wear of critical components, resulting in costly repairs.

How do you know if they are overloading?

Look for a lot of play in the carriage, sloppy or stretched mast chains, bent or misaligned forks. Another big indicator that the truck is being overloaded is flat spots on the steer tires. This shows that truck is being overloaded and the rear end is slightly lifting resulting in the tire wear.

CHRONIC LIFT TRUCK HYDRAULIC ISSUES: Reoccurring hydraulic issues can be a sign that the hydraulic system is being overworked through overloading. Look for weeping seals around the lift cylinders, and bulging hydraulic lines. Regularly rupturing hydraulic lines can also be an indication of overloading.

RACKING DISTRESS: The structural integrity of pallet racking has become a focal point for safety conscience companies and government regulatory agencies alike. All pallet racking is rated for a maximum load per level. The overloading of pallet racking can have a major impact on the safety of the entire warehouse. How do you know if your pallet racking is overloaded? Look for excessive deflection (sag)in the load beams on each level with and without loads
