Product Feature:   Get More From Your Lift Truck Dealer

Toby Goolery - DC Velocity
Every lift truck manufacturer relies on a network of dealers to represent its interests in specific regions of the country. As you might expect, the dealers' "bread and butter" is equipment sales, leasing, rental, and maintenance. But lift truck dealers today are no longer simply providers of equipment-far from it, in fact.

Just ask Mike Romano, president and CEO of Addison, Ill.-based Associated. Associated is a Raymond dealer, but providing lift truck equipment and related parts and services, is just one facet of its mission. The 53-year-old company has refashioned itself as a provider of integrated supply chain solutions that include fleet optimization and labor management programs, as well as systems consulting, design, implementation, and integration, Romano says. As part of that strategy, Associated recently acquired Peach State Integrated Technologies, a company that offers consulting services and automated material handling solutions.

Associated exemplifies an evolving trend in the industry: In addition to supplying lift trucks and related services, dealers are expanding to become equipment and facility designers and integrators. If you think about it, it's really not that much of a stretch. While they may have begun as experts in one area, that doesn't preclude them from becoming knowledgeable about other areas of the distribution center. In today's business environment, moreover, it is really not enough to simply sell and service equipment. Vendors have to understand how their products fit into the entire operation and how all aspects of the facility interact. From there, it's a natural step to assisting customers with the entire facility or operation.

Not every lift truck dealer can-or should-offer every product or service for every customer. But many provide a surprising array of services and solutions-some of which have nothing to do with lift trucks. Here's a brief look at some of the value-added services they provide.

THE EXPECTED ... Some of the value-added services and solutions lift truck dealers offer will come as no surprise.

... AND THE UNEXPECTED
All those value-added services might not sound surprising, since they directly relate to lift trucks.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR THEM-AND YOU?
Why do so many lift truck dealers choose to offer "nontraditional" products and services?

Service Feature:  Lift Truck & Battery Cleaning

Does your lift truck have the winter blues? Is it ready for the spring and summer months ahead?

The mud, salt, graphite, grease, dust, etc. may have built up on your lift truck this winter.... Have you put off forklift maintenance? Spring is upon us so why not schedule your lift truck or battery in for a good cleaning!

Lift Truck Spring cleaning tips:
  • Check your lift truck's service history and inspect all sealed areas of the engine for oil links.
  • Inspect the air intake system for proper sealing.
  • Inspect the forklift's battery, cables, electrical wires and spark plugs for wear and corrosion.
  • Check the radiator hoses, clamps and cap in the cooling system.
  • Check your forklift's transmission fluid for appropriate level, color and odor.
  • Test the brake pedal height and free play operation for proper adjustment.
  • Check the pump, cylinders, hoses and valves for leaks, wear and/or proper settings.
  • Inspect the forks for cracks, height and appropriate thickness.
  • Inspect the condition of valves, rubber parts and hoses in the steering wheel.
  • Check the front and rear tire pressure. Note any cuts, chunking or shredding.
Industrial Battery Cleaning:
Cleaning your forklift battery is essential in prolonging its life and making sure safety measures are kept to prevent injuries. To prevent corrosion and the resultant problems, batteries must be cleaned and dried routinely.

Sometimes minor spills or overflows of electrolyte occur due to overfilling.

The frequency of a general cleaning depends upon two factors:
  • How quickly dust, dirt, oil, and other foreign matter Battery Corossionaccumulates on the top of the battery, and
  • How quick the electrolyte spillage accumulates.
  • When the top of a battery is "dirty" or looks damp, it is ready for a general cleaning. It could be as often as every two weeks or as infrequent as every six months, depending on the batteries environment and the care it receives. The average battery needs general cleaning every three months.
So how does your battery look?

Safety Feature: Shifting Center of Gravity

All objects have a specific center of gravity. Gravity is a force that always pulls objects toward the earth's core. Center of gravity means the point on an object at which all of the object's weight is concentrated and all of the parts balance each other. For symmetrical loads, the center of gravity is at the middle of the load in terms of the load's length, width and height. (Figure 10). Since the capacity of the forklift is based on the assumption of a cube having the center of gravity in the middle, the shape and position of the actual load are key factors when determining whether a load can be carried safely.

When a load is placed on a forklift, the key concept is the combined center of gravity of the forklift and the load. For example, a typical unloaded forklift weighing 4000 pounds may have its center of gravity about 10 inches (25.4 cm) above and two feet (0.6 m) behind the front axle, about half way up the truck body. The heavy counterweight located toward the rear of the forklift places the center of gravity toward the rear, which keeps the forklift from tipping forward. In the meantime, a 4,000 pound load consisting of a cube with even weight distribution has a CG in its center. When the load is placed on the forklift, the combined center of gravity of the forklift and the load will move forward, but the forklift will not tipover so long as the weight of the load is centered and does not exceed the capacity stated on the data plate. But if the load is too heavy, or if it is placed at the end of the forks so that the load center distance is increased, the excessive load moment will cause the forklift to tip forward. Remember, when the forklift engages a load, the combined center of gravity of both the load and the truck system shift forward from the center of gravity of the unloaded forklift. (Figure 11 and 12)
