I Bet You Didn't Know...

There are a lot of plants that can grow right in your backyard that can be dangerous to pets.

The Foxtail is a grassy plant that has sharp or barbed seeds that can actually burrow into the skin of your dog or cat.  This can be not only uncomfortable, but has actually been fatal in some cases.

Try to avoid areas where you see this plant.  If your pet has come into contact with it, check  him carefully - especially on his feet.  If your pet suddenly develops sneezing or breathing problems, see your vet and let her know you've recently been in areas where Foxtail has been growing.

Hot Fun in the Summertime

Looking for fun activities to do with your pet this Summer?  Here are a few of our favorites.

Break out the Kong toy:  load it with his favorite snack, mashed bananas, or peanut butter - then pop it in the freezer for a couple of hours.  It's a refreshing and fun treat that will he will love!

Load a small container with chew toys, add water, then freeze it.  Your dog will love working at this huge ice cube of squeaker toy goodness.

Does your puppy get hot - but gets nervous about the pool?  Try wetting a small towel.  Once you're wrung it out, put it in the freezer for a bit for an instant cooling mat.

If you have any other fun favorites, go to our Facebook page and tell us what you do to make your dog's summer special!

Name That Breed

We'll even given you bonus points if you can pronounce it.  This is the Xoloitzcuintli, and it is one of the world's oldest and rarest dogs

You'll notice something significant about his appearance.  That's right - he's hairless...or nearly.  You may be surprised to know that this breed is a product of evolution, not selective breeding.

They're also ancient.  According to the American Kennel Club (AKC),

"The Xolo accompanied man on his first migrations across the Bering Straits. Their name is derived from the name of the Aztec Indian god Xolotl and Itzcuintli, the Aztec word for dog. With a reputation as a healer, the breed and its warm skin is often put to use in remote Mexican and Central American villages to ward off and cure ailments like rheumatism, asthma, toothache and insomnia. Xolos were also believed to safeguard the home from evil spirits and intruders."

From Hairless to Oh My...

That is one hairy dog!

Introducing the Puli (a group of them is called Pulik, but it's still pronounced the same).

Puli's are medium sized, active dogs.  Despite their rustic appearance, their agility and light-footed nature make them perfect herding dogs.  They're hard workers, smart, and loyal, but it's their shaggy, dreadlocked hair that really makes them stand out.

If you're looking for a pet to spend quality time with, this is your breed.  Bathing is needed about every 12 weeks to keep him smelling good, but make sure you set aside a lot of time for drying.  If he's not thoroughly dried, he will mildew like an old set of towels.  Using Notes From the Grooming Table will help you understand the unique grooming needs of this unusual breed.
