Warmer Winter Weather

It's been unseasonably warm this winter.  Those of us who enjoy the chill in the air and the beauty of snow have not had much to cheer about, so far.  While we've been able to give the shovels a rest, there may be creatures lurking nearby who have been enjoying the warmer temperatures, too.

Adult fleas will die when the temperature outside dips below freezing for several days in a row.  Fleas in other stages of their development go into a dormant stage and will start looking for a host (like your pet) when the weather warms.  That means that fleas can still find their way to your pet when we have a warmer winter.

Inspecting your pet's fur on a regular basis is a great way to make sure you don't have unwanted house guests this winter.  Run a comb through his coat, making sure to get all the way down to the skin and look carefully.  If you find them, you can use the tips on our flea flyer to deal with the problem.

Keeping your pet clean and making sure he's on a flea preventative are great ways to stay ahead of the threat of flea infestation.  If you have any questions about how to treat your pet or your home, give us a call.  We'll be happy to answer your questions and offer ideas that can help.

Homemade Dog Toys

Did you make any homemade gifts this holiday season?  You might be able to make use of some of the crafting scraps into easy-to-make dog toys!

Tie strips of fleece together into a series of knots.  You can also braid them.  Secure them tightly at the ends and you've got a great toy your dog will love!  For a little added fun, try popping it into the freezer for awhile.  Some pets love the cool sensation.

Need an even simpler idea to try?  Tie an old sock into a knot.  For added fun, you can stuff a tennis ball into the toe before tying it up.  Your pup will play with it for hours!

Snow is a Lot Cleaner!!
This holiday season, I was able to spend some time at home with my family and their fur-babies.  Having a lot of dogs under one roof is a great way to see common doggy behaviors.  Here are a few things you might be seeing from your own pet.

Sometimes they get the blues - Dogs get cabin fever, too.  If your dog is stuck inside due to rainy weather, he might be looking lethargic.  You can spice things up for him with more play time.  Get him up and moving to help drive away those winter blahs.

They get itchy - Even though it's not that cold outside, you probably hear the furnace kick in from time to time.  That dry, forced air and reduced humidity is tough on their skin.  Just like humans, their skin can become dry, cracked, and irritated.  Brushing them on a regular basis helps redistribute their natural oils.  You can also talk to your groomer about moisturizing shampoos and conditioners that can make a real difference in how they look and feel.

They get bored - Kids can play video games and build forts when they can't go outside.  Your dog needs something to do to drive off boredom or it can turn into unwanted behaviors - like chewing up your favorite pair of slippers.  Try hiding treats around the house and playing a game of doggy hide and seek.  Just make sure they find all of the treats!

They make a mess - Don't get mad at your pet if he found an awesome puddle and brought mud into the house.  He didn't mean to track dirty prints through the house.  He was just trying to let off a little steam and used the first "toy" at his disposal to break the monotony.  Keeping him busy helps.  Try putting his toys in rotation, too.  That way, he always has something "new" to play with!
